20세기 미국 종교지형과 기독교 역사학의 변화 = 통사를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

20세기 초 미국 기독교 역사학은 1920년대까지 미국 역사학계를 지배한 “과학적 역사학”과 갈등을 빚었다. 그러나 1930년대 이후 과학적 역사학의 경험주의적 전제들이 붕괴되면서 미국 기독교 역사학은 그 존재의 정당성을 인정받기 시작했다. 1930년에 처음으로 현대적 의미의 미국 종교사/기독교사 통사가 출간 된 이후 약 한 세대 동안 여러 분야에 걸쳐 많은 양의 연구가 축적되었다. 1960 년대에 나온 통사들은 이런 집단적 연구의 결과물이었다. 1972년에 출간된 시드니 알스트롬의 통사는 그때까지 미국 기독교 역사에 대한 모든 연구를 총집결한 기념비적 저술이었다. 그러나 알스트롬의 통사까지의 미국 기독교 역사는 여전히 기독교를 미국의 종교와 동일시하고, 기독교 내에서도 개신교, 특히 주류 개신교를 중심으로 미국 기독교 역사를 이해하고 있었다.
1980년대 이후 미국의 종교지형은 급격하게 변했다. 가장 눈에 띄는 변화는 종교의 다원성과 여성주의의 등장이었다. 비기독교 전통의 나라들로부터 꾸준히 이민이 들어오고, 동양의 종교에 대한 관심이 늘어나면서, 힌두교, 불교, 이슬람교와 같은 비기독교 종교들이 급격하게 세력을 확장했다. 이와 아울러, 여성주의가 대두함에 따라 초대 기독교 시절부터 기독교의 실질적 주력이었던 여성의 독특한 목소리와 역사적 역할에 대한 관심이 일었다. 미국 종교사/기독교사 내에서 여성을 찾는 움직임은 1981년부터 5년에 걸쳐 발간된 “미국에서의 여성과 종교”라는 선구자적 저술을 통해 현실화되었다. 21세기 들어서도 20세기를 걸쳐 진행되던 종교적 변화들이 계속 이어지고 있다. 미국 기독교 역사학은 이와 같이 변화하는 종교지형에 처한 기독교의 모습을 관찰하기 위해 방법론적 혁신을 계속하고 있다. 한국 기독교 역사학계는 미국 기독교 역사학의 변화뿐 아니라, 미국 종교지형의 변화에도 관심을 가질 필요가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

American religion has undergone dramatic changes in the 20th century. As “Protestant America” or “Christian America” came to an end by any measure during the 1960s, pluralism has become the part and parcel of American religion. With the increasing influx of immigrants from the non-Judea-Christian world, the demography of American religion has dramatically changed. For instance, Islam, with its over 6 million adherents, already surpassed the size of the Jewish community as well as such mainstream denominations as the Episcopalian Church and the Presbyterian churches. Los Angeles has the most complex and variegated Buddhist community in the world. Besides, due mainly to the marching feminist movement, churches are forced to discover and recognize the place and contributions of women in and to Christianity in the United States.
Historians of American religion and Christianity have tried to reflect the changes in American religion. The primary themes of religious historiography have been changed from Christianity to the Judeo-Christian tradition, and finally to religious pluralism. Women, black religion, native American religion, and eastern religious traditions have become legitimate and important subjects of historical discourses. New historiographical methods have been developed to better articulate the changes in American religion. Christianity remains to be the dominant religion ; it nonetheless has been losing ground and finds itself in an increasingly pluralistic environment. Historians of Korean Christianity may draw insights from changes in American religion and religious historiography. In particular, they need to pay more attention to women in the history of Korean Christianity and to the changes in the Korean religious terrain that is becoming more pluralistic than ever before.
