In present research, boom was manufactured using pressure bag molding and structural analysis was conducted to evaluate the safety of yacht boom.
The coupon test and micro analysis were conducted for evaluating mechanical behavior of the yacht boom. The various mechanical tests were conducted, according to ASTM standards D3039 and D3518, for longitudinal direction tensile, transverse direction tensile test, in-plane shear test respectively.
The result showed that pressure bag molding has almost same mechanical properties as autoclave method in longitudinal direction tensile test. In addition, the laminate structure analysis of yacht boom shows acceptable strength.
Pressure bag molding is convenient and economical than autoclave method, and it can be useful for industrial applications such as wind mill blade, yacht carbon mast, etc.
