As one of Hungarian representative writers in the 20th century, Kosztolányi played a role of incorporating the Hungarian literature, which lagged behind Western European literature, into the mainstream of Western European literature by escaping from the realism, which led the Hungarian literature, and applying the various literary styles from the West European literature to his works. He can be considered to be a writer who realized “l'art pour l'art” advocated by Théophile Gautier, a French writer and critic in the 19th century; he also referred himself to as “homo aestheticus.” Greatly influenced by S. Freud’s psychoanalysis, his representative fiction works, such as Nero, a véres költő, Pacsirta, Édes Anna, deal with the conflict, trauma and unconsciousness among characters sharply and finely.
Living together with others within the framework of society, human beings are generally compelled to be subject to stress and complex. According to character and circumstances, some get their stress and complex properly managed, but with the simultaneous outbreak of inherent stress and complex, others are seriously damaged or destroyed in their human relations. As an intermediate work between the former and the latter, Pacsirta shows that stress and complex are properly managed within the framework of moral and ethics, while Vajkay Ákos and his wife restlessly wander between consciousness and unconsciousness, but consciousness is sometimes pressed by unconsciousness, causing conflicts. In Pacsirta, the trauma inherent in the hero’s unconsciousness always tends to manifest itself outside the consciousness, which is thwarted by fate and ethics. Prevented from manifestation, the trauma seeks an opportunity of being manifested continuously through dream, fantasy, imagination etc. Vajkay‘s hatred toward his daughter and wish for death in his unconsciousness are revealed, when consciousness gets weaker and unconsciousness gets stronger in the conflicts between consciousness and unconsciousness. The very medium offering a contact point of the manifestation is alcohol, which instantly manifests the unconsciousness suppressed by fate and ethics.
This study has the following conclusions: First, Pacsirta, directly influenced by Freud’s theory, shows the major concepts of his psychoanalysis. Second, his view of literature and world is pessimistic, as seen in his confession. This is indicated by its structure: the work consists of 13 chapters, and an event begins on Friday and ends on Friday in a week. In general, 13 and Friday are regarded as negative in Europe. This is shown by the scene that Pacsirta returns home and confines a pigeon in a cage again.
