카미자르(Camisards) 반란 시기(1702-1704) 프로테스탄트 귀족들의 딜레마 = The Dilemma of Protestant Nobility during the Revolt of the Camisards

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Protestant nobles in Cévennes were attacked on the one side by the royal officials of Louis ⅩⅣ who suspected them of secretly leading the rebellion, and on the other by the Camisards incensed at their failure to do just that during the War of the Camisards(1702-1704). In fact, They had occasionally taken part in or even led rebellions against the crown during the previous century. At the same time, they shared religious emotion of the Protestant with the public during the rebellion of the Camisards. Therefore, the Camisards repeatedly expressed their willingness to place themselves under the authority of local nobles, as long as they were good Protestants. But nobles- socially superior groups- were the moderates always ready to compromise and submit. They preferred neutrality. That owed to protect family patrimonies and their own status from royal reprisal, but it resulted also from their diffidence at the social status of the rebels and their discomfort with Camisard prophetism. This is the crowning irony of the Camisard war.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

카미자르 반란(1702-1704) 시기 세벤(Cevennes)의 프로테스탄트 귀족들은 반란군인 카미자르(Camisards)들로부터는 반란 주도를 거부했다는 이유로, 반면, 루이 14세(Louis XIV) 정부로부터는 반란을 주도했다는 의심하에 양쪽으로부터 공격을 받았다. 사실, 이전 세기 귀족들은 왕에 대항하는 반란들에 산발적으로 참여하거나 반란을 주도했었다. 또한 그들은 카미자르 반란 시기에 민중들과는 “프로테스탄트”(protestant)라는 종교적 정서를 공유하고 있었다. 때문에 카미자르들은 지방 귀족이 훌륭한 프로테스탄트인 한, 그들의 권위하에 자신들이 모이겠다는 의지를 반복적으로 표출했지만 사회적 상위집단이었던 그들은 언제나 타협하고 순종할 준비가 되어 있었던 “온건파”들이었다. 따라서 그들이 선호했던 것은 중립이었다. 왜냐하면 귀족들은 한편으로는 국가의 보복으로부터 가문의 재산과 자신의 지위를 보호하고자 했고 다른 한편으로는 카미자르 반란군의 사회적 신분과 그들의 예언주의(prophetism)를 싫어했던 측면도 있었던 듯하다. 이는 카미자르 반란 최대의 아이러니라 할 수 있다.
