The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effect of self-compassion and interpersonal problems in the relationship between covert narcissism and SNS addiction tendency of university students. To this end, it was conducted a questionnaire on covert narcissism, SNS addiction tendency, self-compassion, and interpersonal problems among 310 college students attending universities in Korea. Also, SPSS 21.0 and SPSS MACRO PROCESS 3.5 programs were used to examine the mediating effects of variables.
The results of this study were as follows. First, the covert narcissism of university students has a significant positive correlation with the SNS addiction tendency. Second, the covert narcissism and self-compassion of college students have a negative effect on SNS addiction tendency. Third, covert narcissism and interpersonal relationship problems of university students have a positive effect on SNS addiction tendency. Fourth, the covert narcissism of university students is influenced by self-compassion and interpersonal problems, and indirectly affects SNS addiction tendency. These results suggest that the higher the covert narcissism of university students, the lower the self-compassion, which negatively affects interpersonal problems, and the higher the tendency to become addicted to SNS. Based on the results of this study, suggestions and implications for subsequent studies were discussed.
