한국소설에 재현된 ‘장항’의 장소성 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 일제강점기에 계획도시로 개발된 ‘장항 지역’이 한국소설 텍스트에 재현되어 있는 양상을 분석함으로써, 장항의 다양한 장소 정체성과 심상지리를 고찰하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 장항 지역의 장소성을 보여주는 문학은 중세와 근대 시기에도 존재하며, 해방 이후에도 장항 지역이 재현된 문학 작품을 발견할 수 있다. 본론에서는 이를 두 가지 유형으로 분류하였다. 먼저, 장항 지역을 서사 공간의 일부 배경으로 도입함으로써 도시와 대비되는 자연 경관으로 묘사하고 있는 작품이다. 조정래의 대하소설 『아리랑』 1권과 박범신의 『소금』이 여기에 해당한다. 다음으로, 장항 지역을 아예 소설의 핵심 구성 요소로 전면화한 작품이다. 이들 소설은 등장인물의 내/외적 시선과 체험을 바탕으로 축소도시 장항의 장소성을 형상화하고 있다. 손영목의 「장항선에서」, 솔겸의 『장항선 급행혼약』, 구인환의 「기벌포의 전설」등이 여기에 해당한다. 분석 결과를 정리하면, 첫째, 외부자의 시선에서 바라본 장항의 장소 이미지는 서울에서 멀리 떨어진 철도의 종착지이자 쇄락한 항구도시로 그려지며, 그곳은 여행자의 삶을 되돌아보게 하는 영혼의 고향으로 표상된다. 둘째, 내부자와 외부자의 만남을 통해 상처받은 현대인의 삶을 치유하는 모성 공간으로 장항을 형상화하고 있는 경우이다. 이는 장항 지역의 제련소 굴뚝, 도선장, 박대조림 등과 같은 이미지를 통해 구체화된다. 셋째, 내부자의 시선으로 장항이라는 장소에 각인되어 있는 역사적 상흔과 치유되지 못한 한국전쟁의 아픔을 보여주는 작품이다. 이와 같이 한국소설에 재현된 장항의 장소성은 다채로운 심상지리를 보여주는데, 이는 장항의 역사와 현재를 이해하는 데 도움을 준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper analyzes the aspect of the ‘Janghang’ where was developed as a planned city during the Japanese colonial period represented in the text of a Korean novel. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to consider the identity and transformational aspect of the place "Janghang" and to consider its socio-cultural implications. In the literary works after liberation, works in which the Janghang area was reproduced can be found, and in the main text, these are classified into two types and analyzed. First, it is a type of work that depicts the place image of nature and hometown by introducing the Janghang area as a part of the narrative space. These are Cho Jung-rae"s novels, Arirang and Park Bum-sin"s Salt. The former portrays the placeness of Janghang as an untouched natural landscape that contrasts with the modern colonial space. The latter extends Gunsan, Janghang, and Juksan the hometowns of the main characters, into a natural landscape and an experience space in childhood. Next, using the Janghang area as a subject matter, it is a type of work that represents the placeness of Janghang, a miniature city, based on the characters" external gaze and inner experiences. These include Son Young-mok’s “Janghang Line”, Solgyeom"s “Janghanghang Line Express Engagement”, and In-Hwan Koo"s “The Legend of Gibeolpo”. The analysis is summarized as follows. First, the image of Janghang"s place seen from the outsider"s gaze is portrayed as a destination far from Seoul and a decaying port city, where it is represented as a “hometown of soul” that looks back on the traveler"s life. Second, the placeness of Janghang is portrayed as a space of hope to save the lives of the wounded modern people. This is embodied through images such as smelters, docks in the Janghang area, and Park Dae -food. Third, from the insider"s point of view, it shows the historical history imprinted in the place ‘Janghang’ and the scars of the unhealed Korean War. You can see how the placeness of ‘Janghang’ is formed and transformed through external environment (landscape) and internal experience. It is expected that this will help to understand the history and present of ‘Janghang’ through the image of the place in the novel.
