어문학 : 고전소설 속에 나타난 미인(美人)의 표상과 미의식 = The Icons of Beautiful Women and Concepts of Beauty Represented in Korean Classical Novels

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 고전소설에서 자주 나타나는 미인의 표상을 유형화하고 이러한 미인의 표상을 만드는 동인과 미의식을 탐구하는 것이다. 고전소설 속에서 나타나는 미인의 표상은 개성적인 측면보다는 유형적인 성격이 강한데 이러한 유형적 성격을 통해 고전소설의 여성미를 효과적으로 접근할 수 있다. 고전소설에서 미인을 표상하는 첫 번째 방법은 흑백, 청홍의 색채를 주도적으로 사용하여 여성의 아름다움을 구성하는 것이다. 흑백, 청홍의 색채로 미인을 표현하는 기저에는 관용적이면서도 대조적 색채를 통해 미인을 이미지적이고 인상적으로 표현하려는 미의식이 내재해 있다. 이것은 소설이라는 언어적 매체가 만들어내는 여성미의 일단이라고 할 수 있다. 미인을 표상하는 두 번째 방법은 미인의 모습을 자연의 자질과 속성에 비유하거나 자연과 동일시하는 것이다. 이것은 인간의 아름다움을 자연미와 견주고 모방하는 것으로 주관적 관념의 미의식이 작동한 것이다. 관찰자의 관념 속에 있는 자연미의 체계 중에서 절대미와 조화미, 생동미가 선택되고 미인의 표상을 만들 때 이러한 자연미의 일부분인 절대미와 조화미, 생동미가 유사하게 반복된다. 이것은 대상과 세계를 주관적으로 인식하는 세계 인식에 의해 구현되는 여성미의 일단이라고 할 수 있다. 미인을 표상하는 세 번째 방법은 아름다운 외모뿐만 아니라 바람직한 내면을 서술하여 외모와 내면의 합일체로서 미인을 구성하는 것이다. 이것은 외면과 내면의 균형에 기반한 이상적 미의식이 투영된 것이고 여성의 내면적 미에 대한 본격적 탐색이라는 의미와 함께 유교적 지배담론이 여성의 내면적 미를 규정하고 있음을 보여주는 것이다. 이것은 당대 사회의 지배담론인 유교적 이념이 고안해낸 여성미의 일단이라고 할 수 있다. 이처럼 고전소설의 여성미는 언어적 매체와 주관적 세계 인식, 그리고 당대 사회의 지배담론이라는 동인에 의해 만들어지는 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to categorize the icons of beautiful women represented in Korean classical novels, and examine the factors and concepts of beauty from which the icons of beautiful women are originated. The first method used to represent beautiful women in Korean classical novels is the use of contrasting colors in pairs of black and white or blue and red. The concept of beauty embedded in this method is to make an impressional representation of a beautiful woman with these conventional contrasting colors. It is part of the female beauty created by the lingual media of novels. The second method used to represent beautiful women is to compare the features of a beautiful woman to the quality and attributes of nature or identify them with nature, which is a revelation of personalized conception of beauty. The absolute beauty, the beauty of harmony, and the beauty of vitality are selected within the system of natural beauty within the observer``s conceptual boundary. This is part of the female beauty created by personalized conception of the concerned person and the world. The third method used to represent beautiful women is to portray an idealistic internal beauty as well as the external, and represent a beautiful woman as the unity of the external and internal beauty. This is a reflection of idealistic concept of beauty based on the balance between the external and internal beauty, and part of the female beauty devised by the Confucian ideology, which was a dominant discourse of that time.
