자율 공동체로서 서구대학의 역사와 조선기독대학(연희전문학교) = The History of the University in the West as an Autonomous Institution and Chosen Christian College (Yonhui College)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

‘조선기독대학’(Chosen Christian College)은 ‘대학’의 이름을 쓰지 못하고 ‘연희전문학교’로 존재해야 했음에도 불구하고 사실상 대학수준의 교육 기관이었다. ‘조선기독대학’(연희전문)은 교육과정에서뿐만 아니라, 그 설립 정신과 운영 방침에 있어서, 12세기부터 내려온 서구 대학의 자치와 자율의 전통을 한반도에 이식시킨 진정한 의미의 대학이었다. 중세 서구대학들은 교황 또는 황제의 칙령에 의해 광범위한 특권을 보호받은 자치 길드(universitas)들이었다. 실용학문이 아닌 “일곱 자유학문”(septem artes liberales)을 라틴어로 가르치는 중세대학들은 지역과 국적을 넘어서는 보편성을 추구했다. 또한 기독교적 자율공동체(collegium) 생활 속에서 도덕적 인물로 학생들을 키우는 인성교육을 중시했다. 근세 시대로 접어들자 군주들의 세속권력 강화에 따라 대학의 자율성이 침해되었고 인문주의의 영향으로 학문의 패러다임이 ‘새로운 지식생산’으로 변하며, 서구의 자율적 대학들은 사회적실용성의 이름으로 제기되는 다각적인 도전에 직면했다. 또한 계몽주의 시대와 프랑스 혁명을 거치며 자율적 자치대학과는 전혀 성격이 다른 국립 고등 전문교육기관들이 설립되었다. 여기에 맞서 학문의 수월성과 자율성을 동시에 추구한 훔볼트(Humboldt)적 이상을 따르려는 움직임이 독일에서 등장했지만, 훔볼트적 이상은 독일에서보다도 중세적 자치 전통을 꾸준히 유지해온 영미 대학들에서 오히려 제대로 구현될 수 있었다. 이 시기에 조선에 세워진 ‘조선기독대학’은 영미의 자율적 칼리지 모델을 따라 기독교 교육을 토대로 한 자율성 함양을 추구하였고, 높은 수준의 전공 과정을 개설하여 훔볼트적인 연구 수월성 및 실사구시의 정신도 실현한 놀라운 기획이었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The founding of Chosen Christian College (Yonhui College) in Korea under the Japanese colonial rulewas a bold and potentially subversive project that went against the grain of the colonial regime's policy of confining higher education in Korea to technical instruction geared to the needs of the empire. As a veritable university college, Chosen Christian College grafted itself on the venerable history ofWestern university, rooted in the heritage of autonomy and self-governance granted by the Emperors and Popes to the medieval universitas, or the corporate bodies of students and scholars in Bologna, Paris, Oxford and Cambridge. The collegiate formof Chosen Christian College transplanted to the soils of Korea the ideal of self-discipline and self-respect of themedieval collegium. The pressures on the autonomous universities posed by early-modern nation states to becomemore practical and functional for the benefit of the state and society took severe tolls on the universities in Continental Europe, even as the Humboldtian ideal of free research sought to safeguard some part of the academic autonomy enjoyed by medieval universities. Itwas the British andAmerican universities, whose corporate independence had been well preserved throughout the ages, who creatively adopted the Humboldtian model to enrich the scholarly vitality of self-governing colleges. This combination of collegiate autonomy and academic pragmatism was the objective pursued by the founders of Chosen Christian College.
