The purpose of this study was to present the change of labour-management relationship in Korea press. And by looking into history of Korean press labor movement and surveying consciousness prevailing among the members of press unions, this study trys to suggest the characteristics of press labor movement in Korea.
Generally speaking, unions are organized to improve working conditions, to raise wages, to protect workers' rights and interests and extraordinarily to do political struggle to realize their objectives. The press unions engage in labor movements with these purposes, but additionally have some particular mission unlike unions of other enterprises.
The large mass media business owners in capitalist society are pursuing private profit and disseminating ruling ideology to the mass, but the members of press unions, who are holding fast to a basic attitude of criticizing function of the press, stands up against media capitalist and ruling class.
The media workers are different from those of other industries. They refuse to disseminate ruling ideology and demand editorial independence fair news coverage, So the members of the press union are assigned to not only realizing their rights and interests as workers but also fulfilling press freedom. Korean press unions succeeding to the spirit of free press movement make all efforts for the press freedom getting out of the domination of power and capital. Korean press labor movement is more attentive to realize press freedom than to raise their wages or improve their working conditions, in specific situation of governmental control to the press.
