The works of Lee Tae Jun shows the characteristics of colonialism, the acceptance(adaptation) of the social system in the late thirties. Since his literary debut, he had criticized the purity of art and modern reality. He suggested classical world of the orient, the beauty of innocence and simple sentiments as the alternative ideas. However, by force of Fascist regime in the war time in the late thirties, he changed his ways for life. He aligned himself with colonial ruling theory and put it into practice. He orientalism which had meant classical world of the orient transformed to the ideas of unification and liberation of the whole orient world under New System of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. In 『Moonjang』, a representative literary magazine, 5 short stories of Lee Tae Jun, <An old man in Youngwol>, <Vague>, <A Famer>, <A Walk at Night>, <A Story of Rabbits>, etc were carried. Among theses works, <An old man in Youngwol>, <A Famer>, <A Story of Rabbits> are evaluated as nationalistic narratives under colonial times by critics. This study is to examine the colonialism shown in the 3 stories mentioned in the above. <An old man in Youngwol> is a story centering around the narrative on the development of a gold mine. It emphasizes that it is time for action and practice than for living as a retired scholar thru the meeting of an old man from Youngwol and Sung Ik and the dialogues between them. The two characters symbolizes the civilized city and the unenlightened country, the modern world and the premodern world. In the work, recommendation of development of gold mines, which was one of representative colonial policies in the end of thirties to secure the goods for war times shows the radical change of his consciousness of adaptation of the realty. <A Famer> is a work written about the Wanbao incident in a distorted shape. As the colonial Japan seeking the cause of the Manchurian incident was distorted the meanings of the incident, he spoke good of the Manchuria Immigration Policy on behalf of the colonial Japan authority and hid the liberary devices in many parts of the work. <A Story of Rabbits> was written after coming of the new regime. It seems that the theme of the work is to describe the distress of an intellectual under colonial circumstances who is raising rabbits only for making his living. Considering the writing backgrounds of the work and reading in details, the story shows us the frustrated sentiments of Lee Tae Jun who couldn`t choose but to recommend the compulsory military draft symbolically.
