무속에 대한 근대 한국사회의 부정적 시각

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 한말, 일제시기의 신문들을 자료로 이른바 ‘미신론’이라고 지칭되는 근대 한국사회의 무속에 대한 부정적 시각을 살펴보고 있다. 이 글은 무속의 성격규정, 무속의 의례행위, 무당과 무속 신봉자, 미신타파 운동 등을 중심으로 미신론의 내용을 살펴보고 있다.
미신론이 무속을 비롯한 한국의 민간신앙을 바라보는 근본적인 잣대는 근대화를 가능케 해줄 것으로 여겨진 과학이었다. 그래서 무속은 비과학적이고 불합리한 미신이며, 문명화된 새로운 사회의 건설을 위해서 부정되어야 할 폐습으로 파악되었다. 미신타파 운동은 이처럼 하나의 폐습으로 여겨진 무속과 같은 이른바 미신을 제거하기 위한 사회적 실천이었다.
그러나 미신론은 무속을 비롯한 민간신앙이 한국인의 삶의 중요한 현실 가운데 하나이며, 그것이 한국인의 삶에서 수행했던 긍정적인 역할을 파악하지 못하였다. 나아가 미신이라는 범주에 포괄된 한국 민간신앙의 전면적인 부정은 한국인의 전통적인 생활문화의 부정과 연결될 수 있다는 것을 인식하지 못하였다.
한편 근대 한국사회에서 이러한 미신론은 무속을 바라보는 지배적인 시각이었다. 근대 한국사회에서 미신론이 무속을 바라보는 지배적인 시각으로 자리잡은 것에 대해, 이 글은 기독교나 일제 식민지정책과 같은 외적요인과 함께 근대기에 새로운 사회를 이루고자 하는 한국사회의 내적 욕구 또한 중요한 요인 가운데 하나로 작용했다고 보고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article examines ‘Misinron’(a negative theory of so-called superstitions), a negative viewpoint on Korean shamanism, on the basis of newspapers in modern Korea. Especially this article deals with negative characterizations of the nature of Korean shamanism, of the effects of Korean shamanism’s rituals, of mudangs(Korean shamans) and their clients, and of Misintapaundong(a social movement for the overthrow of so-called superstitions in Korea).
The natural science considered as a basis of modernization was a Misinron’s fundamental yardstick viewing Korean shamanism and other Korean folk beliefs. Therefore Korean shamanism was characterized as an unscientific and irrational superstition, and a bad convention that should be removed for construction of new civilization in Korea. And Misintapaundong was a social movement for the overthrow of so-called superstitions in Korea.
However Misinron has a limit of not recognizing that Korean folk beliefs including Korean shamanism are important parts of Korean life, and their positive functions. At the same time Misinron did not recognize that the negation of Korean folk beliefs meant the erasing many parts of Korean traditional life culture, either.
This Misinron has been a dominant viewpoint on Korean shamanism and other Korean folk beliefs in modern Korea. This article supposes that this negative viewpoint results from the inner desire for modernization of Korean society as well as the outer factors, that is, Christianity and Japanese colonial control.
