1883~1910년 한국의 ‘종교 (宗敎) ’ 용례 특이성: 한국 ‘종교’ 개념 형성사 재고 = The Peculiarity of Usages of ‘Jong-Gyo (Religion)’ in Korea, 1883-1910: Rethinking the History of ‘Jong-Gyo’ Concept Formation

The word ‘Jong-Gyo [宗敎] ’ is known as a concept that was adopted as a translation of ‘religion’ in Japan and spread to East Asia. Because of its novelty, the term ‘Jong-Gyo [宗敎] ’ was considered to contain the meanings of the modern concept of religion in the West. However, if you look at many expression cases of this term, you can see that ‘Jong-Gyo [宗敎] ’ is used in the meanings of ‘the best teaching’ or ‘national religion (teaching) ’ depending on the meaning of each Chinese character. In particular, if you look at the cases used in newspapers and dictionaries from 1883 to 1910, it can be seen that around 1910, ‘Jong-Gyo [宗敎] ’ became dominant as the translated word for ‘religion’. In this respect, ‘Jong-Gyo [宗敎] ’ is an overinterpretation to see that the modern concept of religion was used based on the use of the term ‘Jong-Gyo [宗敎] ’ in the 19th century. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the concept of ‘Jong-Gyo [宗敎] ’ was understood in light of the concepts of ‘Gyo [敎] ’ or ‘Do [道] ’, which have been used since the Joseon dynasty. Therefore, although the term ‘Jong-Gyo [宗敎] ’ is used, it cannot be regarded as being used in its modern meanings. This trend is also found in East Asian countries with Chinese character culture (Japan, China, Vietnam) . Therefore, it is necessary to reconsider the history of religion concept formation in Korea.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

‘종교’라는 말은 일본에서 ‘religion’의 번역어로 채택되어 동아시아에 확산된 개념으로 알려져 있다. 또 ‘종교’라는 용어는 그 새로움 탓에 서구의 근대적 ‘religion’ 개념을 담는 것으로 여겨졌다. 그런데 이 용어의 많은 사용례를 보면 그 낱글자의 의미를 따라 ‘최고의 가르침’ 혹은 ‘국교’라는 의미로 사용되는 경우를 볼 수 있다. 특히 1883년부터 1910년까지 신문, 사 전 등에서 쓰인 사례들을 보면, ‘religion’의 번역어로서 ‘종교(宗敎)’가 우세해지는 것이 1910년 전후의 일이라는 것을 알 수 있다. 과거 19세기에 ‘종교’라는 용어가 쓰이는 것을 근거로 근대적 종교 개념이 사용되었다고 보는 것은 그런 면에서 지나친 확대 해석이라고 할 수 있다. 19세기에서 20세기 초에 ‘종교’ 개념은 조선시대부터 사용되었던 ‘교(敎)’나 ‘도(道)’ 개 념에 비추어 이해되었다. 따라서 ‘종교’라는 용어가 사용되고 있지만, 그 근대적 의미에서 사용되고 있다고 볼 수 없다. 이 러한 경향은 동아시아의 한자문화권의 나라들(일본, 중국, 베트남)에서도 공히 발견된다. 그러므로 한국의 종교 개념 형성 사는 재고될 필요가 있다.
