A Study on the school of Buddhist Sculpture
in the Muyum and Dowoo descent

This paper discusses on the school of buddhist sculpture in the Muyum descent from the several respects. First, it is found that Muyum descent is the only school which provides the relationship of succession between master and disciple in three generations at the present time. Muyum's predecessor is confirmed as Buphae or Hangsa, and Dowoo or Seung-il is known to be found a school among the later generation. This is the unique genealogy of buddhist sculptor identified in three generations; therefore, Muyum descent is deserved to be brought high attention.
Second, with regard to the iconographical characteristic of the buddhist sculpture in the Muyum and Dowoo descent, the characteristics appeared on the 11 buddhist sculptures are classified and examined. With these characteristics, the manufactured dates of the sculptures are analyzed. Therefore not only the chronology but also background in creating sculptures can be understood in this section.
Third, the stylistic peculiarity and chronology of buddhist sculpture in the Muyum & Dowoo descent are studied. In terms of stylistic peculiarity, the Buphae's style on the statue of Trikaya and statue of Samsebul at the hall of the Great Veneration of Sunwoon Temple, Muyum's style on the statue of Samsebul at the hall of the Great Veneration of BulGap Temple, Dowoo's style on the wooden statue of Sakyamuni Triad at the hall of the Great Veneration and the statue of Amitabha at the hall of the Paradise at Songrim Temple, and Seung-il's style on the statues of Samjang and Ten Kings at the hall of the Underworld at Songrim Temple are briefly discussed in order.
