영문학 수업과 『위대한 개츠비』의 스토리텔링 -과거를 가로질러 현대의 사회문제 읽기- = English Literature Course and The Great Gatsby's Storytelling -Reading the Current Issues Traversing Past-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오늘날 대학은 취업을 위한 도구로 전락했다는 비판을 받고 있지만 그럼에도 불구하고 대학의 존립목적은 청년을 성숙한 공동체의 구성원으로 교육시키는 것이다. 이를 위하여 무엇으로 인간과 사회에 대한 이해를 교육시킬 것인가? 본 연구는 문학의 스토리텔링에서 그 단초를 찾고자한다. 왜냐하면 문학작품은 인간의 보편적인 삶을 종합적으로 재현해내고 공감각적 상상력을 배태시킴으로써 학습자들로 하여금 다양한 삶의 문제들에 노출케 하여 그 해결책을 재고하도록 이끌 수 있기 때문이다. 이런 맥락에서 본 연구는 피츠제럴드의 『위대한 개츠비』를 중심으로 그 시대적 배경에 대한 이해와 더불어 오늘날의 사회현상, 특히 빈부격차와 인종차별의 양상들과 접점을 찾고자하는 것이다. 학습자들은 주요 인물들의 스토리텔링에 관심을 기울이는 가운데 과거의 삶을 가로질러 자신들이 직면한 현재의 사회상을 반추하며 타자의 고통에 공감하고 이를 계기로 개인의 삶으로부터 공동체의 삶으로 시선을 확장시키는 통찰력을 키울 수 있다. 이것이 문학 혹은 문학교육의 필요성이라 하겠다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Today universities have been faced with a harsh condemnation of being reduced to a means for getting a job. Nevertheless, their aim of existence is to educate the youth as mature members of a community. Then by what could they educate the understanding of human beings and the world? This paper tries to find out the motive in literature. That is because literary works could make learners expose various aspects of life and reconsider their solutions by reproducing the general lives of people. In this context, this paper seeks to examine the point of contact with current issues like economic inequality and racial discrimination in the process of understanding the roaring twenties’ historical backdrop based on The Great Gatsby written by Fitzgerald. While learners concern for the major characters’ storytelling and ruminate social problems that they have also faced today, they can empathize with others’ pain by extending their attention from personal life to community. This has led our society to be in progress gradually but positively. It is the basic role of literature.
