正祖(정조)의 佛敎政策(불교정책)과 梵宇攷(범우고)의 佛敎史的價値(불교사적가치)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

『범우고』는 1799년 정조의 명으로 편찬되었다. 8도 328군현에 소재한 사찰을 『신증동국여지승람』을 근간으로 당시 편찬된 읍지와 다양한 자료를 고증하여 절의 연혁과 존폐를 정리하였다. 『범우고』는 1765년 편찬된 『여지도서(輿地圖書)』에 누락된39개 지역의 149사(寺)를 보충하여 수록하기도 하였다. 때문에 조선시대 사찰의 수적변화를 가장 정확하게 파악할 수 있는 완성도 높은 자료다. 『범우고』는 정조의 불교인식과 그 정책의 단면을 알 수 있는 가치를 지니고 있기도 하다. 정조는 『범우고』의 제문(題文)에서 승려들이 예악과 풍속, 교화가 미치지 못하는 산골짜기에 살면서 진정시키고 더욱이 국난의 상황에서 그들이 기여하는 바가 크다고 하였다. 결국 정조는 국가적 차원에서 보호하고 관리하고자 한 것이다. 『범우고』는 사찰에 대한 단편적인 기록에 불과하지만, 유학자의 시문이나 각종 기문, 사적비 등을 수록하고 있어 이 시기 불교사 연구의 기반을 제공하고 있다. 더욱이 『범우고』에 수록된 사찰의 수적 통계는 종래의 연구 성과와는 달리 증가추세를 보이고 있어 사찰의 수적 추이만을 기준으로 불교가 탄압받았다는 과거의 부정적 인식은 재검토의 여지가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Beomugo was published in 1799 by a royal order of King Jeongjo. There are detailed information on Buddhist temples in 328 prefectures and counties in 8 provinces all around the country contained in this book. The Newly Edited Reference Compilation of Documents on Korea and various topographies of all districts were used as a source of the information. Since 149 Buddhist temples from 39 regions which the Detail Map of Korea did not mention are seen from the book, it is regarded as the most accurate evidence of the numerical changes of Buddhist temples at the time. It also contains materials elucidating King Jeongjo`s perception on Buddhism and the significance of his Buddhist policies. The King commented that Buddhist monks of his kingdom devoted themselves to defend their country during hard times and helped to enlighten people in remote areas. This can be read that the King was protecting Buddhism on a national level. Even though Beomugo can be seen as a fractional record of Buddhist temples of the time, the Confucian literatures and historical accounts in the book can also be a useful source for a general Buddhist research. The growing numbers of Buddhist temples in the book suggests that there is a room for reconsideration on the general belief of suppressed Buddhism of the Joseon Dynasty solely based on the declining numbers of the temples.
