한국 다문화 사회에서 사회통합의 가능성에 관한 연구 = A Study of the Possibility of Social Integration of Multicultural Society in Korea: with emphasis on the types of ethical culture and the conception of multiple identities

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이번 연구의 목적은 한국 다문화 사회에서 다문화 구성원들이 상호 차이를 인정하고 동등한 사회적 삶을 영위함으로써 사회통합이 가능할 수 있는 지를 탐구하는데 있다. 오늘날 다문화주의 연구의 핵심은 차이와 평등을 토대로 서로 다른 문화와 정체성에 대한 상호 존중을 실제에 적용시키는데 있다. 하지만 오늘날 한국 사회의 특수한 맥락을 미국과 유럽 사회의 특수한 환경에 따른 전개된 다문화주의 연구 일반에 적용되기는 힘들다. 특히 비록 제도적으로 동시에 법적으로 다문화 구성원들이 ‘한국인’으로 간주된다고 하더라도, 구성들 간 ‘한국인’이라는 정체성의 자기-타자 확인에서 갈등은 피할 수 없다. 이를 해결하기 위해서는 적어도 한국 사회에서 다문화 구성원들이 영위했던 삶의 모습들부터 검토해야 한다. 그러므로 이번 연구에서는 한국에서 다양한 다문화 구성원들이 지녔던 윤리적 삶의 가치, 그리고 이러한 윤리적 삶이 각 개인 수준부터 사회 및 국가 수준에 이르는 과정에서 한 개인이 다문화의 상황과 사회적 환경을 통해 수준별로 갖게 된 하나지만 서로 다른 정체성, 즉 다중적 정체성의 수준별 전개 양상에서 근본적인 사회통합의 가능성을 가늠할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to study of any possible feature of social integration by acknowledging and respecting different features of lives among the members of multicultural society in Korea. In one of the main streams of the contemporary studies on multiculturalism, two values of difference and equality have been applied to our practices. Without considerations on particular situations of Korea, however, it is obvious that its theoretical and practical applications to Korean society can have any limit in the reflections of the situations of European or American societies. In the process of identifying oneself or being identified by others as a Korean, in particular, there is the unavoidable conflict between the members of multicultural society, even though all of them have equal rights in legal systems. For preventing or overcoming any cultural conflicts or clashes, it is necessary to examine their features of lives in Korea, basically in the level of ethical life. This paper is, therefore, to explore ethical values that they have had or accepted in Korean lives and to have possible perspectives to social integration in the different dimensions of multiple identities that each multicultural member has in the one heart by different cultural backgrounds, like heads and tails.
