타원형 지반 아치 구조의 형태를 Ho(outer arch height)와 Hi(inner arch height)를 이용하여 정의하였다.

Geosynthetic reinforced piled embankment (GRPE) is a method to minimize the vertical load acting on the soft ground through the soil arch and geosynthetic reinforcements. In this study, large-scale experiments on the GRPE were conducted to understand the soil arching phenomenon in GRPE. Three-dimensional finite element models were compared and validated with the experimental results, and a series of parametric studies were conducted to track the changes of the soil arch structure. Based on the numerical results, the ellipsoidal soil arching theory which can consider the variability of the soil arch structure was proposed.
Large-scale experiments on the GRPE were carried out under four different basal reinforcement conditions. The behavior of the GRPE can be divided into two stages. In Stage 1, the soil arching effect is gradually developed, and the pile efficacy is linearly increased according to the embankment height. In Stage 2, the soil arch is completely formed, and the pile efficacy is kept constant regardless of the embankment height. The installation of the geosynthetic reinforcements significantly reduces the vertical displacement of the bottom of the embankment.
Base on the maximum principal stress directions and vertical stress distributions obtained by numerical results, the stress transfer paths of the GRPE were assumed by the 3D ellipsoidal soil arch. The shape of the ellipsoidal soil arch can be defined by Ho (outer arch height) and Hi (inner arch height). The changes of Ho and Hi were summarized with the soft soil stiffness, the internal friction angle of the embankment, the geosynthetic tensile stiffness, and the embankment height. The most critical factor affecting the shape of the ellipsoidal soil arch is the soft soil stiffness. If the soft soil stiffness is more than 2 MPa, the influence of other parameters for shaping the soil arch becomes negligible. When the soft soil stiffness is 1 MPa, the variation of Hi/Ho versus the internal friction angle and height of embankments is converged to 0.4.
In this thesis, an ellipsoidal soil arch theory is proposed to consider the changes in Ho and Hi. By adjusting the Ho and Hi, existing soil arch theories (Hewlett and Randolph, 1988; Zeaske, 2001; Van Eekelen et al., 2013) can be described, and the other dome-shaped soil arch also can be expressed. An ellipsoidal soil arch theory can accommodate the changes in soil arch shape summarized in other studies such as McGuire (2011) and Zhuang and Cui (2015). The elliptical soil arch theory tends to overestimate the pile efficiency by about 1.12-1.16 times. However, by assuming that the distribution of the vertical stress acting on the bottom of the embankment is more realistic as the model of the Van Eekelen et al. (2013), it will be improved to approach the measured pile efficacy.
