The Translation and Study of Korean Literature Abroad

Up to January 2003, the amount of translated works of Korean Literature in English are 399, among which 170 are translated abroad, 189, in Korea, and 40, abroad as well as in Korea at the same time. Like other language speaking countries, the 1980s and the 1990s are peak not only for the translation of Korean Literature but also for its scholarly attention. The statistic analysis of information accumulated in various databases such as The Harvard Korean Studies Bibliography, Hawaii Korean Studies Bibliography, and MLA International Bibliography, shows that up to February 2004, 33 books, 16 dissertations and one thesis, 200 articles, and 84 reviews are devoted to the study of Korean Literature. Based on "The French Catalogue of Translation of Korean Literature," it has been found out that 156 books were translated to French. These materials are analyzed into production periods, genres, publishers, and publishing years. In accordance with production periods, out of the total 156 books, classics and current literature are in the ratio of 19:136, showing how extensively translation set value on current literature. Judging from genres, modern novels are translated the most and this can be seen as a peculiar characteristic of French speaking countries. Summing up the statistical characteristics of Korean Literature introduced to the Hispanic World, the introduction of the Classic Literature is very limited while the Modern Poetry occupies the greater part of the introduction. Up to Jan. 2003, the amount of Korean literature translated into German ion book format were 149, totalling 2119 individual works, among which modern novels are predominant. Dramas as well as classics are also important to introduce Korean literature and culture and the systematic support and help of Daesan Cultural Foundation and Korea Translation Institute cannot be overemphasized for the popularization and wide spread of Korean literature in Swiss and Austria as well as in Germany. The history of translating Korean literature in Russia is already 110 years. But in Russia, studying and translating Korean literature has been continuously developing since 1945, in a humane direction, by academic necessity, but only a few of Russian study on Korean literature were introduced to our country. And I classified press-related articles and translated publications by authors, genres, ages, publication time, etc. to systematize the present situation of Korean literature. Like this, it was due to consistent study activities of experts in Korean literature such as Lee В.Н., Niggichina М.И., Ttrazzebichi А.Ф , Iremenggo Л.Е., Ivanova В.И., Yelicef Д.Д., Zedanova Л.В. etc. that study on Korean literature systematically developed. The history of studying Korean literature's in the Czech Republic has been already 50 years. Object of research-theoretical books, theses for a degree. They are a total of 15 volumes including 13 volumes of theses for a degree, 2 volumes of theoretical books. Before 1990, Kim Dong In and Lee Sang who was not introduced to the literature. 『Nový orient』 of the Department of Oriental Studies at Carel University and 『Archiv orientální』 of Czech's Academy mostly publish theses on Korean literature. Up to April 2003, the amount of translated works of Korean literature in Chinese Speaking Countries (China and Taiwan) are 254 books, including those of North Korea. The characteristics of Chinese Speaking Countries is that they are heavily influenced by political and social relations between Korea and China. Until 2003, as a result of the study on Korean literature announced in Chinese in China and Taiwan, there are 38 books, 23 doctoral dissertations, 41 master's theses, 459 articles and 69 newspaper articles. Among Korean literature which was published from 1886 to 2002 in Japanese language, are 571 books and 9031 small works.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 프로젝트의 1차 연도와 2차 연도의 연구 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다:
구미언어권 중에서 영어권의 경우는 한국문학의 번역 출판이 해외 현지에서보다도 국내에서 더 많이 활발하게 이루어지고 있다는 별로 바람직하지 못한 현상이 확인되었다. 또한 향후 연구와 활용의 바탕이 될 서지목록 작업에 있어서 그 양적 방대함에서 비롯된 여러 문제가 드러났다. 이와 관련, 앞으로는 영국 등 서구 영어권과 미국 등 북미 영어권으로 연구 대상지역을 구분하여 독자적인 개별연구가 수행되도록 해야 한다는 주장이 설득력을 얻고 있다. 프랑스어권의 경우 타언어권에 비해 매우 고무적인 연구 결과를 도출해 낼 수 있었다. 한국문학 번역지원정책과 프랑스 현지 출판계 및 독자층의 관심과 기대치가 어느 정도 접근점을 찾은 것이다. 현재 상당히 많은 한국문학 작품이 프랑스어로 번역되고 연구되고 있는 것으로 파악되었으나 한국문학 연구를 비롯하여 해외 한국학 연구 전반에서 드러나는 퇴조 현상은 보다 적극적이고 효율적인 지원 정책의 필요성을 역설적으로 말해주고 있다고 본다.
한국문학 번역 소개 역사가 타언어권에 비해 현저히 짧은 스페인어권에서는 전적으로 2인 1조 공동번역 체제에 의존하는데다가 특정 시대, 특정 작가, 특정 장르에 편중된 현상을 보임으로써 번역정책상의 문제점을 드러내고 있다. 현지인 한국학자, 한국문학 전문가가 거의 없는 상황에서 "외국문학"으로서의 한국문학을 논하기에는 아직 시기상조로 보인다.
독일어권에서의 한국문학 번역 소개는 독일에 치중되어 있고 스위스나 오스트리아에서는 한국문학 번역이 거의 이루어지지 않고 있음이 드러났다. 현대 문학, 그 중에서 장편소설의 번역 출판이 주를 이루고 있어 한국문학사에 있어서나 세계문학적 관점에서도 중요시되는 다양한 작품들이 선정, 번역되어야 하며 출판 유통과 관련, 홍보와 마케팅에 있어 영향력이 있는 풍부한 대형출판사를 섭외하는 일이 관건으로 지적되었다.
러시아에서는 한국문학이 소개된 이래 순수 인문학의 한 갈래로서 해방 이후 현재까지 반세기 동안 꾸준히 한국문학 연구가 발전되어왔음이 확인되었다. 과거 고전문학, 북한문학 일변도의 연구에서 최근에는 남한 문학에 대한 관심과 연구에 대한 열기가 감지되고 있어 앞으로의 정책적 지원과 투자가 더욱 요청되는 상황이다.
체코에서의 한국문학 소개 역사는 러시아의 그것과 대동소이하다. 다만 최근 들어 한국문학의 번역 소개가 다수 이루어지고 있으나 대개 군소출판사에서 출판되고 있음이 확인 되었다. 한국문학 연구 역시 소수의 한국학 학자들에 의해 명맥을 이어가고 있어 한국문학이 체코에서 폭넓게 수용되기에는 아직 많은 문제점과 미비점을 안고 있는 것으로 드러났다.
분량면에서 일본어권과 영어권 다음으로 많은 한국문학 번역작품을 기록하고 있는 중국에서는 시대 상황의 변화와 더불어 위의 러시아, 체코어권과 유사한 전개 과정을 거쳤으며 최근에는 한류 기류에 편승해 순수문학 보다는 상업적 대중문학이 더 많이 출판되는 양상을 보이고 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 한국문학 연구에 있어서도 양적으로는 특히 중국대륙 개방 이후 크게 성장하고 있으나 주로 재중동포 한인학자들에 의한 고전 연구에 치중하는 경향이 있어 독립된 한국문학으로서의 위상을 확보하는데 어려움이 있지 않을까 우려된다
