Waste tires have been a disposal problem in the past and are continuing to accumulate throughout Korea today. Currently wast tires which is produced from car and truck reach over 17 million waste tires in 1996 and, according to the long prospect of waste tires production in Korea, the waste tires production of annual amount of over 30 million is anticipated at A.D. 2000 (KICT, 1996). Waste tire stockpiles constitute environmental and health hazards by producing air pollution from tire stockpile fires and breeding grounds for potential disease carrying mosquitoes and vermin. Under recent environmental plan of Korea government, the recycling of waste tires has been increasing. Scrap tires that have been cut into chips are coarse grained, free draining, and have a low compacted density, thus offering significant advantages for use as retaining wall backfill and reduction material of vibration. This report presents the engineering properties that are needed use tire chips for these purpose. The following properties were determined for tire chips from two suppliers : gradation, compacted density, shear strength, compressibility, coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest, permeability, and effect of vibration reduction using scrap tires for railroad etc. Also, the purposes of this study are to provide the ways of utilizing waste tires as fill materials and reduction material of vibration by performing laboratory experiments and field test. It is expected that this study will contribute to resolving the disposal problem of waste tires as well as to recycling waste tires.
