In this study, the stories of Arang were researched based on the relationship patterns and characteristics of the characters. As a research method, the discourse situation was divided into two parts, and the composition of the character's personality in each situation was investigated.
In the scene where Won-gui and Won-nim face each other, it was found that Arang's personality changed from a victim to a transcendent being. On the other hand, in this scene, it was considered that Won was only a subject who assumed to know, and only after hearing all of the stories did Won-gui become a subject of knowing. The truth that made him change from a subject assuming to know Won to a subject to know is the reason why Arang died. What Arang wanted to tell the world about her death was the fact that she did not comply with Tongin's sexual request, which led to her death.
Arang tells the world the truth about her death through Won and Won gains the knowledge to become a true ruler through Arang. Therefore, it can be said that Arang and Won are in a complicit relationship in that each plays a role in helping the other achieve what they want.
On the other hand, in the tale of Arang, the desire of Tongin is drawn as a space that indicates that it cannot exist. In the scene where Won interrogates Tongin, he tells Tongin that there is no other option than death. The tale of Arang emphasizes that just as women's sexuality should be managed, so should the desire and sexuality of the middle class be managed. However, on the other hand, this process is not fixed, and there is a gap in the text for the voices of the oppressed to be uttered. “Shin Geomu’s grudge” is a good example of that. In this article, I tried to provide an opportunity to think of Arang’s tales as a place where discourses of various dimensions of discipline and restrictions intersect beyond the frame of female resistance to male oppression.
