Now Korea is in the wave of mountain-climbing people in outdoor suits. Public transportations are full of mountain climbers and mountain trail entrances are crowded with people, cars, and flea markets. As a factor that causes a change of urban space, the study has a focus on this wave of change, how the impact of mountain climbing is accommodated by urban space, and how an urban planning should be considered in certain situation. This question led to the investigation of the appearance and meaning of leisure and to the research of an existence of leisure space.
The object of this study, mountain trail entrance, is a new space that appeared by highly accumulated people of mountain climbing. First, to define the exact concept of mountain trail entrance space, considerations about theories has been done which shows the relation between metropolis and green space and leisure. Based on these considerations, the term ‘mountain trail entrance’ has been defined as a space where activities, before and after climbing, take place in. The study of mountain trail entrance as an urban space has been proceeded with analysing about urban situation of the site and using theory of analysing urban form based on Uidong, Jinguandong area of mountain Bukhan, and Wonjidong area of moutain Cheonggye. Analysis on urban form has been done by observing the change in components which form urban fabric of the 3 areas. And character of the 3 areas has been drawn to a conclusion by observing the realtions of these components. A comparison of not only the 3 areas but also of the existing perspective have led to a clear definition and an exact scope of mountain trail entrance space. From this, a clue for urban planning, for leisure space including mountain trail entrance, has been suggested.
The study emphasizes mountain trail space not as a space that appears as a dot in a city but as a space of a street which accommodates multiple activities, and a space which is not limited to a place around mountain trail but follows urban transportation infrastructure node. Architectural activities in those areas, which provides various inner and outer-space, appears with fully occuping a plot by using temporary architecture. It is important to understand the exact strating point of a main street because a mountain trail enterance space can be controled by adjusting the hierarchy of the street. Because this space appears with node of transportation infrastructure, the urban planning can be done by distributing the mountain trail entrance space by adjusting a bus line.
This study insists the necessity of recognizing mountain trail entrance area as an important factor of urban planning about leisure space. A problem of urban discontinuity, which present leisure space has, can be solved by planning open space of a plot that consists main street, like urban continuity made by a variety of inner and outer-space appears in mountain trail entrance space. This study also emphasizes the multilayerising of urban program which is observed in mountain trail entrance space should be considered as an important factor in urban planning.
