The active ingradients of pyrethrum flowers-pyrethroids-have been showing outstanding insecticidal activity but low mammalian toxicity.
Remarkbly, their physiological activity is closely assoiated with cyclopropane ring.
A number of synthetic routes to the cyclorproane ring are reported and γ, δ-unsaturated aldehyde plays a key role in many of these synthesis.
For this reason, a new versatile synthesis of the aldehyde is reported here. With good yield 5-methyl-4-hexenal was obtained from 2-methyl-3-butene-2-ol and ethyl vinyl ether.
