Visual Input Enhancement, 작업기억력, 인지스타일, 그리고 영어능력이 안구운동, 두뇌 활성화 영역, 문법습득, 그리고 텍스트 이해에 미치는 영향: 시선추적기 및 fMRI 데이터를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 주목적은 visual input enhancement(여기서부터 VIE), 작업기억력, 인지스타일, 그리고 영어능력이 안구운동, 두뇌활성화영역, 문법습득, 그리고 텍스트 이해에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 조사하기 위해 기존의 행동데이타 뿐 아니라 시선추적기와 fMRI를 이용하여 인지 및 신경과학관련 데이터를 수집하는 것이다. 이를 위해 3회의 연구가 계획되었다. 1차 연구는 행동데이터중심인데 주요 발견은 다음과 같다. 첫째, VIE는 문법습득에는 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤지만 읽기이해에는 부정적인 영향을 미쳤으며, 읽기이해에서는 작업기억력과 VIE의 상호작용이 나타났다. 둘째, 예상과 달리, 인지스타일과 영어능력은 예측력이 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, VIE와 작업기억력의 상호작용이 관찰되었다. 2차 연구는 시선추적기를 이용한 인지데이터 중심의 연구이며 주요 발견은 다음과 같다. 안구운동 데이터분석 결과 목표문법에 더 많은 집중을 할수록 문법습득에는 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤고 그와는 반대로 읽기이해에는 부정적인 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다 (문법과 읽기이해의 trade-off가 발생). 이와 같은 결과는 1차 연구의 행동데이터 중심의 결과에 대한 과학적인 검증인 동시에 VIE가 초래하는 인지과정에 대한 최초의 데이터이다. 3차 연구는 fMRI를 이용한 신경과학데이터중심의 실험인데, 현재 파일럿이 진행중이다. 본 연구진의 성과는 영어를 외국어로 습득하는 학생, 교사, 그리고 교과서 제작자들에게 상당한 교육적 및 사회적으로 시사 하는 바가 크며 동시에 VIE의 효과에 대한 새로운 증거를 제시하였다는 측면에서 기존의 문헌을 확장하는 학문적으로도 매우 큰 의미가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The primary purpose of the present study was to determine how visual input enhancement, working memory capacity, cognitive style, and English language proficiency affect eye movements, brain activation areas, grammar learning, and text comprehension by utilizing eye-tracker and fMRI as well as by utilizing the traditional behavioral methods. To that end, three experiments were designed. Major findings of Experiment 1 which gathered behavioral responses of the participants are as follows. First, VIE had positive effects on grammar learning and negative effects on text comprehension. Second, unexpectedly, cognitive style and language proficiency were not significant predictors. Third, a significant interaction between VIE and working memory capacity was observed. Experiment 2 focuses on cognitive data by utilizing an eye-tracker. The results show that longer fixations on the target grammar was positively related to grammar learning and negatively correlated to text comprehension, indicating the potential trade-off between grammar learning and text comprehension as a consequence of VIE. This finding corroborates the results of Experiment 1 and extends the current literature by providing the first eye movement data concerning the effects of VIE. Experiment 3 centers on neurophysiolog
