국문 초록 (Abstract)

고려시기 승려와 사원은 그 사회경제적 위상에 상응하여 각종 포시(布施)활동을 활발하게 전개하였다. 불교의 교설에서도 보시를 권장하고 있었기에 그러한 활동이 더욱 활발하였는데, 그 활동에는 빈민구제, 여행자 편의 제공, 환자 치료가 포함된다. 고려시기 승려들이 직접 나서서 빈궁한 이에게 보시하는 일은 허다하였다. 불교행사가 설행될 경우에도 빈민에 대한 먹을 것의 제공이 있었다. 종을 만든다거나 사원을 중수·중창하는 경우에도 참여한 인원에게 식사를 제공함으로써 빈민구제의 소임을 수행하였다. 빈민구제활동에서 두드러진 활동을 보이는 승려는 법상종(法相宗)계통의 승려들이었다. 고려시기 사원이나 승려들은 여행자에게 편의를 제공하는 일도 수행하였다. 여행자에게 안전을 확보해 주었고, 식사와 잠자리를 제공하였으며, 우마에게 꼴을 제공하였다. 존비(尊卑)에 따라 처소를 달리하게 하였다. 교통로에 세워져 편의를 제공하는 일을 일차적 기능으로 하는 사원은 흔히 院이라 불리었다. 사원과 승려는 민인의 질병에 대해서 앞장서서 치료를 담당하였다. 탁월한 의술을 소지한 승려가 여럿 보이는데, 이러한 승려들은 일반 속인환자를 위한 치료에서도 크게 활약하였을 것으로 보인다. 불교는 자연에 대한 베풂을 강조하고 있는데, 그것은 살생(殺生)의 금지, 방생(放生)의 권장으로 나타났다. 이러한 행위는 자연에 대한 보시라고 할 수 있겠다. 승려들은 보시를 실천하면서 보시를 권장하는 논리를 전개하였다. ``하나를 베풀면 만배를 얻는다.``라는 주장도 있었고, 보시를 하면 ``안락하고 수명이 길어진다.``고도 하였다. 죄업을 씻는 데도 보시가 중요하였다. 불교에 대한 신심이 돈독 하거나 교설에 대한 이해가 깊은 세속인 가운데 보시에 더욱 앞장서는 모습을 보이는 이가 많았다. 사원이나 승려가 나서서 보시활동을 전개하고 나아가 적극적인 보시론을 설파함으로써 고려사회에서 보시문화가 정착할 수 있었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Corresponding with their social and economic status, Buddhist monks and temples in the Goryeo period held various alms activities. Buddhist teaching that encouraged alms also promoted such activities. Monks themselves often held alms activities to help the poor. When Buddhist events were conducted, food was offered to the poor. Also when constructing a bell or repairing a temple, the monks of the temple relieved the poor by offering meals to those who involved in the work, It was the monks of the Beopsang School(法相宗) that played a prominent role in activities to relieve the poor. Temples and monks in the Goryeo period also helped travelers. They secured the safety of travelers, offered accommodation and food to them, and fed the travelers` oxen and horses. They provided different accommodations according to travelers` social status. Temples which were situated at traffic roads and whose primary task was to supply accommodations and food to travelers were normally called Won(院). Temples and monks also took the lead in treating civilians suffering from diseases. Some monks had outstanding medical skills and knowledge, and they were considered to have played a significant role in treating civilian patients as well as high status people. Buddhism emphasizes giving something to nature, which was embodied into the prevention of the taking of life and the encouragement of the freeing of animals. These can be considered as alms to nature. Performing alms, monks also encouraged alms. There were sayings such as ``When you give one, you get rewarded ten thousand times,`` and ``Alms makes you comfortable and live longer`` Alms was also important in reducing one`s sins. Devout civilians Buddhists and those who had an in-depth understanding of Buddhist teaching were more aggressive in alms than other people. Thanks to temples and monks that held various alms activities and aggressively promoted the theory of alms, alms activities could be firmly established as a culture in Goryeo society.
