Through the technology of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we are overcoming the pandemic by applying methods suitable for non-face-to-face environments caused by COVID-19. In the field of performing arts, with embracing the latest technology of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there is also a change in the ways of communication with the audience. While the scope of creative expression is spontaneously expanding by using the latest technology in the field of performing arts, however, research on the possibility of performing arts with artificial intelligence is inadequate.
Therefore, this thesis focuses on a case of performing art in which artificial intelligence is applied. It is to study whether artificial intelligence is an appropriate device for a new type of performing arts that combines technology and art. In addition, this study aims to consider the potential and expected effects of artificial intelligence in the performing arts.
In this thesis, the meta performance <Schrödinger's Lizard Tail> was selected as the subject of the study. The entire production process and results were analyzed from the planning stage of the performance to the evaluation stage after the performance.
Theoretical background relating to the definition and classification of artificial intelligence was established through document study. Through case studies of culture and arts with artificial intelligence, the range of applications of artificial intelligence was comprehended.
In the text, the role of artificial intelligence in performance was examined through the analysis of the meta performance <Schrödinger's Lizard Tail>. In the meta performance <Schrödinger's Lizard Tail>, artificial intelligence did not just play the role of technology but also appeared as a character in the play that symbolized 'technology'. The technology used on the stage surpassed the role of a supplementary device for background information of the performance. This artificial intelligence technology was used as a character that delivered messages by the creators.
As a result of interviews and surveys for the evaluation of the performance, it was confirmed that it was difficult to recognize the elements of artificial intelligence in the performance and the reason why artificial intelligence was used was not identified. However, respondents viewed the convergence of artificial intelligence and performance as a new attempt and positively predicted the possibility of its development.
The positive aspects of artificial intelligence-based performing arts according to the above study results are as follows.
First, the audience's interest in the collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence is increasing. Second, it has sufficient value as a medium that can overcome the limitations of the stage. Third, there are various ranges to apply artificial intelligence in comprehensive art such as scripts, music, videos, etc.
If artificial intelligence-based performances are produced in the future, the following points should be considered while strengthening the above positive aspects. First, clear reasons and goals must be set for the use of artificial intelligence in performance. Second, the role of artificial intelligence must be specifically expressed in the performance. Third, there is a need for popularity to lower the entry barrier of the convergence performance itself.
It is meaningful that a study on a new type of performing art that combines theater and dance with artificial intelligence has been conducted. I hope that our effort to adopt artificial intelligence to build an alternative form of performing art contributes to the establishment of various contents.
