광주항쟁과 애국적 민주공화주의의 탄생 = 저항적 시민사회의 정체성 구성에 대한 구조해석학적 분석

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목표는 1980년 5월 광주항쟁 당시 항쟁 공동체의 집단적 정체성을 구성했던 사회적 가치와 상상적 공동체의 의미구조를 규명하는 것을 통해 한국 시민사회의 문화적 심층구조를 이해하는 데 기여하는 것이다. 그 목표를 달성하기 위해 이 연구는 구조해석학 방법론을 동원하여 광주항쟁 당시 시민들이 제작, 유포한 호소문, 성명서, 상황보고, 연설문, 노래가사, 가두 방송 원고 등의 텍스트를 분석했다. 특히 분석의 초점은 참여자들이 공유하는 집단적 가치와 상상적 공동체의 관념이다. 집단적 가치의 측면에서는 민주?민족?민중?공화?반공주의의 이념과 가치를, 상상적 공동체의 측면에서는 지역ㆍ나라ㆍ민족ㆍ세계로 확장되는 상상적 공동체의 공간적 범위를 해석가설로 놓고, 전체 텍스트를 관통하는 집단적 정체성의 내적 질서와 위계구조를 재구성했다. 분석 결과, 광주항쟁의 집단적 정체성의 중핵에는 민주-공화주의의 집단적 가치와 대한민국이라는 나라공동체에 대한 집단귀속감이 놓여 있었다. 광주항쟁은 한국사회에서 국가권력과 시민사회의 격렬한 충돌이 일어나는 저항의 고조기에, 민주공화주의적 가치지향과 애국주의적 정체성이 결합되는 집단적 정체성이 강렬하게 분출된 대표적 사례로 이해될 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The object of this article is to inquire into the meaning structure of social consciousness and imagined communities which constituted the collective identities of the participants of the 1980 Gwangju civic uprising, thereby making a contribution to the understanding of the cultural deep structure of Korean civil society. This study analyzed on the basis of structural-hermeneutical methodology 54 texts which diverse groups of protest participants produced and made public during the protest events: declarations, public announcements, letters of plea, public speech, song lyrics, manuscript of street broadcast, etc. The two foci of interest were the shared social values and the spatial boundaries of imagined communities. As potentially cogent interpretive hypotheses the analysis took into consideration: the democratic, popular, nationalist, republican, and anti-communist ideas for the shared values, and the regional, patriotic, ethno-national, and cosmopolitan social identities for the imagined communities. The result of analysis was that the democratic-republican values and the strong commitment to the political community lay at the center of collective identities of the participants of the protest actions. The Gwangju uprising can be understood as a historical example which shows that at the peak of protest cycles in South Korea the collective identities composed of democratic-republican value-commitments and patriotic social identities emerge from the life-world into the arena of contentious politics.
