An airport is a gateway that travelers must go through to go to other countries, and is considered the representation of public places.
Incheon International Airport, which has established itself as a global hub airport, has opened Terminal 2(T2) in 2018.
By introducing cultural and art-related services to the airport space and expanding the place to new paradigm of service, passengers in the airport can share and experience cultural aspects.
In line with the recent trend in which public places like airports are turning into complex cultural spaces, airports around the world are striving to provide cultural services by introducing public art into spaces.
Among other airports, public artworks set up at Global Hub Airport make it a symbolic and meaningful place for passengers staying at the airport, serving as an international hub airport in the global era. Therefore, I would like to propose the work by classifying the servicescape in which the work can be installed in the airport, and exploring ways to coexist with the work more effectively.
In the present, new services are being introduced worldwide at airports, but it is hard to find any case of the study that explains the effects of cultural services caused by existence of public art in public spaces.
So, the characteristics of location and public art at global hub airport will be analyzed and the theoretical considerations of servicescape will be studied through prior research and literature materials. Then, the current artworks status at the recently opened T4 at Singapore's Changi Airport, the world's No. 1 airport, selected by Skytrax in 2018 and Incheon International Airport's T2 will be analyzed using a distribution chart and categorized according to servcescape.
Among servicescapes, publicity was evident in most of the artworks in all the places and depending on the work, all the factors of location characteristics were affected. Location characteristics of the global hub airport including the spatial mobility, global culturality, and interplay, have related to the user. Installing artworks along the flow of a space, gives a boost to the mobility movement. With "art" and "culture" taking over as new services in public places, the airport is in harmony with passengers around the world.
In this study, the boarding gates and empty spaces where the artworks were most frequently installed were selected as servicescape and planning of the work were suggested according to the analysis of the case. The concept keywords of the work are light, transmission, shadow, and sound, excluding existing sculptures or stereoscopic artworks so that people feel restful just by looking at the work. The analysis of the work proposal was derived from the FGI (Focused Group Interview), i.e. target group interviews consisting of a group of experts.
The evaluation result of the artworks proposed to the group showed the relationship between the characteristics of public art and the location characteristics of the global hub airport. Also, the evaluation included that the artworks provide new experiential service while generating curiosity and interest from passengers through the use of dead space, drawing visitors' participation, and introducing artworks to the rest area.
The purpose of the project is to create attractive spaces to enhance the quality of service, experience, and time that travelers stay in, and to highlight spatial images with the goal of international marketing, considering the characteristics of airports alone. Through public arts, the airport, where an international public space used by people from all over the world, can become a space where empathy and interaction are made which increases the value of a place and makes it meaningful. The development of cultural marketing combined with art can be a driving force to become a global hub airport.
This research suggests public art works according to airport servicescape as a strategy to leap into global hub airport and proposes the future direction of public art. The work proposed in this paper is meaningful in that it will be used to provide new experience services depending on the nature of the airport. Therefore, it is crucial that it can be applied to create meaningful service experience and contribute to the development of practical services at the airport.
