거시이론에서 사건사로, 그리고 다시 거시이론으로? -역사사회학의 연구 경향과 새로운 길의 탐색 = From Macro-structural Theories to Event Analyses, and Return to Macro Theories: Trends in Historical Sociology and An Alternative Path of Development in the Future

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 역사사회학이 어떤 과정을 거쳐 제도화 되었고, 어떻게 변화되어 왔으며, 앞으로 어떻게 나아가야 할 것인지를 살펴보려고 한다. 이를 위해 우선 사회학의 중심을 이루고 있는 유럽과 미국에서 역사사회학이 자리 잡아간 과정과 변해가는 모습을 검토하려고 한다. 이어서 이러한 제도화와 변화의 과정이 한국의 학문적 상황에서는 어떻게 반영되었는지를 알기 위해 사회와 역사와 한국사회학 에실린 역사사회학 논문을 경험적으로 분석해보려고 한다. 더 나아가서 앞으로 역사사회학은 어떠한 방향으로 나아가야 하며, 그리고 이러한 새로운 방향의 모색에 있어 한국의 역사사회학이 기여할 수 있는 방안은 무엇인지를 탐색해보는 것이 글의 목적이다. 역사사회학이 사회학의 발전에 미친 긍정적 부정적 영향은 분명하다. 시간의 개념이 들어가지 않는 연구가 가질 수 있는 위험성을 극복하는데 역사사회학이 도움을 준 것은 물론이며 보다 넓게 보면 사회에 대한 심층적 이해도 사회의 형성과 변화에 관한 역사적 접근을 통해 가능하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 최근 들어 역사사회학은 거시 구조이론에서 미시 사건사와 문화연구로 방향을 바꾸면서 새로운 위기를 맞고 있다. 이는 국내 역사사회학의 연구경향에서도 똑같이 발견되고 있다. 거시구조이론이 가진 몰역사성을 극복하기 위한 방안이 모색되면서 역사사회학의 연구가 단편화되고 파편화되는 또 다른 위기를 맞이하고 있다. 이 위기를 극복하기 위한 새로운 길은 기존 연구가 가진 단점들을 버리고 장점들을 묶어 하나의 총체적 결합으로 나아가는 것에서 찾아질 수 있다. 특히 사건에 근거한 이론 구축을 확대·심화함으로써 사건과 이론을 새롭게 통합함으로써 탈출구를 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 이 과정에서 한국 역사사회학은 한국의 역사적 경험 특히 식민/탈식민의 경험에 근거한 새로운 이론구축을 통해 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this paper I intend to trace back the institutionalization process of historical sociology in the U. S. and Europe: how it emerged in the academic field, how it was transformed, and how it will be developed in the future. I will also investigate how this general trend is reflected in the research papers of historical sociology in Korea by analyzing those published in Sociology and History (Sahoewa Yoksa) and Korean Journal of Sociology (Hankuk Sahoehak), and how Korean historical sociology can contribute to the development of social theories. Historical sociology first emerged in the 1970s with a practical purpose of overcoming ahistorical fallacy in the construction of social theories, as most representatively exemplified in functionalism. Despite its great contribution to a deeper understanding of social reality by constructing macro-structural theories, historical sociology faced a new challenge when some scholars criticized decontextualization of these theories and emphasized the necessity to steer its attention towards event analyses and cultural studies. This new trend, when pursued in an extreme form, brought about a new crisis by fragmenting theories of historical sociology and abstracting events from the general social theories. One effective way to solve this crisis is to synthesize events with theories and causality with narratives. Historical sociology in Korea will help in developing new social theories as it can construct them based upon historical experiences of Korean society, especially colonial modernization and decolonization processes.
