An national coordinate system is an essential component for a geographic/land information system, since it provide the spatial reference for expressing position information. The national mapping of Korea was based on 3-different meridians on the Gauss-Schreiber projection in year 1910s, later this was changed to the Gauss-Kruger projection. Existing map coordinate systems maintained the national land survey project on 1910s have some structural shortcomings of unknown computational procedures and accuracies of control points. This study discussed the issues involved in choosing coordinate system for digital mapping and their applications as a basis for saptial data management. Topics of this study are as follows; (1) Analysis of existing coordinate system : the status of existing geodetic datum, reference coordinate system, and analysis the Gauss Kruger's map projection. (2) Historical background of the computation procedures of 1910s : the coordination conversion method by Gauss-Schriber directly from geodetic coordinate to grid coordinates (3) Some problems and solutions using of the mapp coordinate system : the relation of grid coordinate systems, the characteristics of map projection coordinates usage, the deviation of the G-K and the G-S coordinates, the problem of longitudes origin shift(10.405”) and its solution. (4) Implementation of the new coordinate system for digital mapping : the study about the foreign country's coordinate system, the analysis of projection method and its projection correction, the transformation of the existing coordinate system. (5) Proposed new coordinate system : the elements to realize an implemention of new coordinate system, the conversion formula of geocentric reference system, projection formulas.
