소유구조가 기업수명에 미치는 영향에 관한 실증 연구 = The Relationship between Ownership Structure and Firm Survivability : Evidence from the Korean data

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오너경영과 전문경영인체제 중 어느 쪽이 더 우월한가에 대해서는 오랜기간 많은 연구가 이루어져 왔다. 특히 기업의 단기적이고 재무적인 성과 측면에서 소유구조의 우열을 논하는 연구가 대다수이다. 본 연구에서는 기업의 궁극적인 성과변수라고 할 수 있는 장기적 생존 및 수명을 결정하는데 있어 소유구조의 역할에 대해 살펴본다. 이를 위해 1980년 기준 우리나라 400대 기업 중 2005년까지 생존한 기업을 가려낸 후, 소유구조의 영향에 대해 실증 분석한다. 그 결과 (1) 순수한 형태의 오너경영과 전문경영인체제는 기업의 장기적 생존에 유의미한 차이를 가져오지 못하는 반면 (2) 계열사를 통한 간접적 오너 지배는 기업의 생존에 악영향을 미칠 수 있음을 보인다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A number of researches have reported mixed results about the relationship between ownership structure and firm performance. Most of them focus on the short-term financial performance. e.g. ROA, Tobin's q, stock price, etc. In this paper, we try to shed light on the role of ownership structure in determining the survivability and longevity of a firm, which is more ultimate and long-term goal of a firm. Specifically, we empirically test the relationship between ownership structure and firm survivability using the data of 350 Korean firms during the period 1980-2005. The first key finding of this study is that whether the control of a firm is from the direct ownership of founding family members or from a professional manager does not make any significant difference on the firm survivability. However, the second key finding indicates that the indirect control of firm through the affiliated firms could weaken the survivability of a firm.
