인구압력과 전쟁의 상관관계에 관한 연구 : 신라를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

국가단계 사회 형성 과정 연구에서 전쟁이 미친 영향은 서구의 인류학 및 고고학계에서 많이 연구가 되어 오고 있는 주제들 중의 하나이다. 이 논문은 이 주제의 중요성을 감안하면서 기원 후1세기부터 6세기 사이에 신라에서 발생한 전쟁이 인구압과 상관관계가 있을 것인가에 대해서 검토한 것이다. 특히, 중국의 역사기옥인 삼국지 위서 동이전에 보이는 인구압과 전쟁과의 상관관계를 검토하였을 때 전쟁은 인구압 때문에 발생하는 것이 아니라 오히려 인구를 확보하기 위한 것이라는 것을 알게 되었다. 이것은 전통적으로 서구의 학회에서 전쟁이 인구압에 의해서 발생한다는 것과는 다른 주장이다. 그리고 이 글에서 삼국사기 신라본기에 등장하고 있는 자연재해의 기사와 전쟁의 기사를 세기별로 나누어서 검토하고 이 두 변수 사이에 상관관계가 있을 것인가에 대해 통계분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과 전통적인 농경사회에서 농사에 결정적인 영향을 미치는 자연재해가 많이 발생함에 따라 전쟁의 빈도수도 많았다는 것을 알게 되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper focused on the relationship between population pressure and occurrence of warfare in Silla. Kingdom between the first and sixth centuries A.D. A great number of Western anthropologists and archaeologists have argued that population pressure in conjunction with environmental circumscription bad played a critical role for the explanation of warfare. In this paper. however, examining both early Chinese. I argued that chat is not the case in ancient Korea. In particular, it turned out that warfare was not related to over-population but related to under-population. In other words, it seems that ancient people considered people a source of wealth rather than a food and/or resource consumer. By utilizing the Samguk sagi, this paper also investigates whether warfare took place when there were any natural environmental stresses. According to statistical analyses against historical records concerning the frequencies of warfare and environmental stress, it turned out that the two variables were closely related.
