In this study, attmpts have been made to divide the course of the development of a money economy during the Yi Dynasty into four distinctive periods. These four periods are (1) the early period of copper coin circulation, (2) the period of backlash against copper coin circulation, (3) the period of development in copper coin circulation and (4) the period of Establishiment of Modern Monetary system. Attempts have also been made to examine the historical characteristics of each period with respect to money policies, views of currency value and conditions of the distributive economy which prevaile during the Yi Dynasty.
Such examination has been aimed at clarifing the logical grounds for dividing that era into the aforementioned four periods. If the historical characteristics revealed through the examination are found to be acceptable as logical grounds for the said division of the era, the knowkedge obtained though such period by period review would be useful in increasing our understanding of the socio-economic history of the Yi Dynasty.
Such knowledge could also constitute a yardstick for assessing the overall histerical development of that era from the viewpoint of a socio-economic history.
