A Descriptive Analysis of Norms in Translational Techniques on English Movie Titles into Korean
This study aims to find out norms used through the process of translating movie titles from English to Korean. Nearly 340 American and British movie titles introduced in Korea in the year of 2014 are collected from one of well-known portal web-sites called Naver. Seven translational techniques, namely addition, definition, literal translation, omission, text reproduction, rewriting and transliteration, are devised to categorize the movie titles accordingly. This study is an in-depth version of the study titled "Identifying the Evidence of Norms at Work in Translating English Movie Titles into Korean: A Preliminary Descriptive Study" published in 2016.
According to the analyzed data, transliteration is the most used technique when translating the movie titles. The technique concerns a major norm when translating the movie titles. All techniques but rewriting are all used together with other techniques. It implies that this tendency can be regarded as another norm for translating movie titles from English to Korean. This study adopts a descriptive analysis method to find out hidden norms when translating English into Korean movie titles.
