In China which is a multiracial country, 10 nationalities among 55 minority nationalities believe in Islam. Among 10 nationalities, the Hui nationality and the Uygur nationality have most of the population, and if the populations of two nationalities are added up, it accounted for approximately the 90% of the total population of Muslims in China.
The Hui reside in the west northern area in China, and the representative region is The Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The native culture of the Hui is most well maintained in Ningxia. As a basis of the Ethnic Costume of the Hui, there are libaimao, dasidaer, gaitou and zhunbai. The big difference between the ethnic costumes of the Hui and the Han nationality is the headdress part. The Han don not usually wear white cap, but the Hui are often wear white caps go to any place.
The Uygur mainly reside in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China. The Ethnic Costumes of Uygur are basically the huamao, shirts, qiaban and one-piece. The representative Ethnic Costumes are huamao and the one-piece made out of Atlas silk. And if we look at the part of the pattern, the Uygur tribes used the plant pattern according to Islam. But there were some cases of using the pattern of the animal and the human figure which Islam prohibited, because they inherited the custom of Shamanism and Buddhism before the Islam entering to Xinjiang.
The Hui most intensively reside in Ningxia, and the Hui are those Muslims spread throughout the regions of the Han population and other nationalities. In this thesis paper, the types of ethnic costumes of the Hui were analyzed by region. According to Hainan Province, Yunnan Province, Tibetan area and The Han nationality area. More than 99% of the Uygur live in Xinjiang. The Uygur ethnic costumes have the difference in the southern part and the northern part in Xinjiang, but it is more uniformity than the Hui.
The most common feature between the Hui and the Uygur is believing in Islam, and the characteristic of the ethnic costumes were mostly influenced by Islam. Persia, in other words, Iran area is connected through Silk Road to China, and the interchange with China started in seventh century B. C. And if we see the formation of the Hui, we can see that there is a relation to Iran. So I selected the Iran as the representative of Islamic countries compared with the Hui and the Uygur.
Accordingly, this study examined the origin, history, distributed areas, geographical environment and culture of religion of the Hui and the Uygur who are the Muslims, and researched the ethnic costumes of the Hui and the Uygur. Through the ethnic costumes of Muslims which are the Islamic country, find the conclusion by examining the characteristics of the ethnic costumes of the minority nationalities of Muslims in China.
