This study on Edvard Hagerup Grieg (1843-1907), Henri Wieniawski (1835-1880) and Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) was conducted to enhance the author's understanding of the composers' musical ideologies, specifically the influence their lives and their philosophy had on their compositions. In-depth analysis of the composers' music has reconstructed the author's approach to their work and her performances of their pieces. Deep insight into these composers' ideologies will promote a sucessful completion of the author's graduation recital which will include, <E. H. Grieg Violin Sonata No. 2 Op. 13 in G Major>, <H. Wieniawski Polonaise Brillante No. 1 Op. 4 in D Major>, <S. Prokofiev Violin Sonata No. 2 Op. 94a in D Major>.
The work of Edvard Hagerup Grieg, a Norwegian Composer from the Romantic Era, sets a representative example of the musical Nationalism of Scandinavia in the 19th century. Grieg's pieces were mostly established on Norwegian culture and traditions. Through her study, the author has analysed Grieg's unique way of combining the color of Romanticism, the feel of Nature and the taste of Norwegian traditions, in harmony.
Virtuous technique and Slavic components of Henri Wieniawski’s music define the unique style of his compositions. Especially, Wieniawski’s Polonaise stems from Polish folk songs and demonstrates extremely energetic and sophisticated rhythm. This study investigates the composer’s intentions behind his pieces that require exceptional performance techniques.
Sergei Prokofiev, a Russian composer from the 20th Century, produced master pieces that represent Russian Modernism by integrating the Neo-Classical style with the unique color of Russian culture. In this thesis, the author studies the periodic background from which Neo-Classicism originates from and how the idea of Neo-Classicism has been reflected in Prokofiev’s music.
