Gender, Sadness, and Anger = 젠더, 슬픔, 그리고 분노 - 엔터테인먼트 소비를 통한 내적 만족감 對 외적 기대감 충족 -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 여성과 남성이 어떻게 (a) 내적인 혹은 주관적인 동기를 충족시키기 위해 그리고 (b) 외적인 혹은 사회적인 기대를 충족시키기 위해 각각 슬픔과 분노를 조절하는지 그들의 엔터테인먼트 메시지의 선택적 노출을 통해 알아보았다. 여성과 남성의 선택적 노출을 예측하기 위해 혼합된 디자인의 실험 (N = 161) 연구가 수행되었다. 실험결과, 슬픔을 조절하기 위해 슬픔을 곱씹는 메시지 對 슬픔을 잊게 하는 메시지 선택에 있어서 젠더 차이가 부분적으로 발견되었지만, 분노를 조절하기 위해 분노를 곱씹는 메시지 對 분노를 잊게 하는 메시지 선택에 있어서 젠더 차이가 발견되지 않았다. 연구 결과는 슬픔과 분노에 대한 사회 규범적 믿음 (즉, 고정관념) 그리고 지속적이고 배타적인 형태의 선택적 노출이 해당 믿음을 더 강화시킬 수 있을 가능성에 의거해 논의되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The present study explores how females and males regulate sadness and anger on the basis of (a) intrinsically gratifying (i.e., fulfilling inner or subjective motivations) and (b) socially appropriate (i.e., fulfilling external or social expectations) goals, which may lead to distinct selective exposure to entertainment messages. A mixed-design experiment (N = 161) was conducted to predict the selective exposure. Results show that although gender differences were partly observed in regulating sadness by selecting ruminating vs. distracting messages, the differences were not found in regulating anger because both genders selected ruminating over distracting messages. Findings are discussed in terms of prescriptive beliefs about sadness and anger that reflect gender stereotypes and effects of persistent selective exposure that may further reinforce the beliefs.
