The present study investigated the habitats of Korean fir trees (Abies koreana E. H. Wilson) on Mt. Baekwun (Baekwun-san), determined the current distribution, quantified the contribution of biological and nonbiological environmental factors affecting the distribution, derived actual and potential habitats, presented a plan for the establishment of protected areas, applied RCP 8.5 climate change scenario to analyze the effects of climate change on the future distribution of Korean fir trees, and predicted future potential habitats. According to the results of the study, 3,325 Korean fir trees (DBH >= 2.5 cm) inhabited Mt. Baekwun, and their distribution area was approximately 150 ha. Populations of Korean fir trees were confirmed to exist at an altitude of 900 m above sea level and were distributed up to 1,200 m. Based on potential distribution, areas appropriate for habitation by Korean fir trees were analyzed to be 450 ha, three times the current distribution area, with a focus on Sang Peak (Sang-bong), Eokbul Peak (Eokbul-bong), Ddari Peak (Ddari-bong), and Dosol Peak (Dosol-bong). The forest stands near Sang Peak, the main peak, were evaluated as those with the most appropriate potential for the habitation of Korean fir trees, and populations of the trees tended to prefer the northern slope rather than the southern slope. When climate change scenario RCP 8.5 was applied and future potential distribution was analyzed, the habitats were expected to decrease in area to 20 ha by 2050, with a focus on Sang Peak, and areas appropriate for habitation were predicted not to exist by 2080. Judging from such results, as global warming accelerates, the habitats of Korean fir trees are clearly expected to move from lowlands to highlands.

To our best knowledge, monodispersed beta-Ga2O3 nanospheres were successfully synthesized for first time via morphology-controlled gallium precursors using the forced hydrolysis method, followed by thermal calcination processes. The morphology and particle sizes of the gallium precursors were strongly dependent on the varying (R = SO42-/NO3-) concentration ratios. As R decreased, the size of the prepared gallium precursors decreased and morphology was altered from sphere to rod. The synthesized S2 (R = 0.33) consists of uniform and monodispersed amorphous nanospheres with diameters of about 200 nm. The monodispersed beta-(GaO3)-O-2 nanospheres were synthesized using thermal calcination processes at various temperatures ranging from 500 to 1000 degrees C. Monodispersed beta-(GaO3)-O-2 nanospheres (200 nm) consist of small particles of approximately 10-20 nm with rough surface at 1000 degrees C for 1 h. The UV (375 nm) and broad blue (400-450 nm) emission indicate recombination via a self-trapped exciton and the defect band emission. Our approach described here is to show the exploration of beta-Ga2O3 nanospheres as an automatic dispersion, three-dimensional support for fabrication of hierarchical materials, which is potentially important for a broad range of optoelectronic applications.

Periglottic masses can be treated by laser excision, simple electrocau-tery, or wide excision, including neck dissection. Smooth induction of anesthesia and airway management is a challenge in these patients. There is limited published literature on the probable airway complica-tions during anesthetic induction with significant variability and low predictability among patients. We report one case of unexpectedly severe ventilatory difficulty in a patient who developed recurrent vocal cord cancer. Through the analysis of this case, we stress the limitations of clinical prediction of airway compromise during anesthetic induction and discuss the usefulness of a video laryngoscope in this kind of emergency.

Here, we investigated the effects of different nutrient requirements (NR) on blood metabolites, transferable embryo number after multiple superovulations with artificial insemination (AI), body condition score (BCS), and estrus cycle in Hanwoo cow. Nineteen Hanwoo cows were randomly divided into three groups (80%, 100%, and 120% NR, containing 6, 8, and 5 individuals, respectively) and fed based on the NR. In experiment 1, glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), albumin (ALB), and total protein (TP) were analyzed. In experiment 2, total number of recovered embryos and transferable embryos was examined after embryo recovery and multiple superovulations with AI. In experiment 3, body weight, BCS, and estrus cycle were examined. In experiment 1, total cholesterol was significantly different among the 80%, 100%, and 120% NR groups (126.5 ± 3.3, 152.6 ± 2.4, and 177.4 ± 1.8 mg/dL, respectively, p < 0.05). The triglyceride and BUN levels in the 120% NR group were significantly higher than those in the 80% and 100% groups (p < 0.05). The NEFA levels were significantly different among the 80%, 100%, and 120% NR groups (440.5 ± 18.2, 318.5 ± 23.1, and 195.1 ± 8.5 ЧEq/L, respectively, p < 0.05). The AST and TP levels in the 80% NR group were significantly lower than those in the 100% and 120% NR groups (p < 0.05). In experiment 2, the 120% NR group showed a higher percentage of transferable embryos than the 80% and 100% groups (p < 0.01). The mean body weight and BCS among the 80%, 100%, and 120% NR groups were significantly different (p < 0.05). The estrus cycle in the 80% NR group was delayed compared with the 100% and 120% NR groups (20.8 ± 0.2 and 21.2 ± 0.5 days, respectively). In conclusion, the blood metabolic tests proved that Hanwoo cows with 120% NR can produce a large number of transferable embryos. Thus, 120% NR is the appropriate feeding level for this type of cows as it results in the production of a large number of transferable embryos by multiple superovulations with AI.

In this study, we present variations in transfer characteristics and memory performances caused by work-function variation (WFV) in the metal gate of a one-transistor dynamic random-access memory cell based on a gate-all-around junctionless field-effect transistor (GAA-JLFET). To investigate the influence of WFV, we simulated 200 samples of GAA-JLFETs. The samples had different transfer characteristics depending on the metal grain granularity. In addition, we calculated and analyzed the mean and standard deviations for the transfer characteristics. Further, the memory performances were analyzed using two extreme cases with the highest and lowest threshold voltage (Vth) as examples. When WFV was not considered, the current ratio was 108, and retention time was more than 10 ms. Meanwhile, when WFV was considered, the current ratio was 10² and 10⁴, and the retention time was reduced to 0.051 ms and 2.2 ms, respectively. These results showed that WFV affected not only the transfer characteristics in GAA-JLFET but also the memory performances; it could adversely affect the reliability of the memory device.

Inducible cyclic AMP (cAMP) early repressor (ICER) I gamma acts as an endogenous inhibitor and disrupts the transcriptional regulation of cAMP response element binding protein (CREBP) responsive genes. Since the overexpression of ICER I gamma induces severe diabetes in a transgenic mouse model, with characteristics similar to human diabetes mellitus, an ICER I gamma construct containing an adjustable pancreas tissue specific promoter was utilized in the present study. Using the human insulin promoter region, a doxycycline (dox)-inducible ICER I gamma expression system was established using the tetracycline (tet)-control led transactivator (tTA) with a TA response element (TRE) promoter. A unitary tet-on system that combined a tet-on activator cassette was also developed and was controlled by the human insulin promoter with a responder cassette containing genes encoding ICER regulated by the TRE promoter. To determine whether dox-enhanced ICER I gamma expression affected insulin production, the unitary tet-on ICER I gamma vector was introduced into a mouse pancreatic beta-cell line and then the cells were treated with 0.1-1 mg/ml dox. The results revealed a robust increase in ICER I gamma expression and decreased insulin production. Therefore, this in vitro system may be useful for studying human diabetes mellitus and pre-diabetes using tissue-specific promoters and a dox-inducible transgene. In addition, porcine transgenic fibroblasts containing dox-inducible ICER I gamma were generated. These fibroblasts may serve as a cell source for somatic cell nuclear transfer to generate a porcine model of human diabetes mellitus.
