Impacts of the Journal Evaluation Program of the Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors (KAMJE) on the Quality of the Member Journals

2018 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.33 No.48

Background: In 1997 the Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors (KAMJE) instituted a program to evaluate member journals. Journals that passed the initial evaluation were indexed in the KoreaMed. Here, we report changes in measures of quality of the KAMJE member journals during the last 20 years. Methods: Quality measures used in the study comprised 3 assessment categories; self- assessment by journal editors, assessment of the journals by KAMJE reviewers, and by Korean health science librarians. Each used detailed criteria to score the journals on a scale of 0 to 5 or 6 in multiple dimensions. We compared scores at baseline evaluation and those after 7 years for 129 journals and compared improvements in journals indexed vs. not-indexed by the Web of Science (Science Citation Index Expanded; SCIE). Results: Among 251 KAMJE member journals at the end of 2015, 227 passed evaluation criteria and 129 (56%) had both baseline and 7-year follow-up assessment data. The journals showed improvement overall (increase in median [interquartile range; IQR] score from baseline, 0.47 [0.64]; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.44–0.61; P < 0.001) and within each category (median [IQR] increase by editor's assessment, 0.17 [0.83]; 95% CI, 0.04–0.26; P = 0.007; by reviewer's, 0.45 [1.00]; 95% CI, 0.29–0.57; P < 0.001; by librarian's, 1.75 [1.08]; 95% CI, 1.77–2.18, P < 0.001). Before the foundation of KAMJE in 1996, there were only 5 Korean medical journals indexed in the MEDLINE and none in SCIE, but 24 journals in the MEDLINE and 34 journals in SCIE were indexed by 2016. Conclusion: The KAMJE journal evaluation program successfully contributes improving the quality of the member journals.

Preprint acceptance policies of Asian academic society journals in 2020

2021 Science Editing Vol.8 No.1

Purpose In the current era of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, the trend of sharing new research results through preprint platforms is receiving more attention from researchers than ever before. Preprints have been recognized as a primary and essential method to disseminate new findings faster than traditional publications. Therefore, it has become necessary for journals and editors to acknowledge these changes, prepare preprint policies, and notify authors accordingly. This study aimed to review the status of preprint policies of international publishers and Asian academic society journals. Methods In total, 383 Asian academic society journals registered in Science Citation Index Expanded were selected as a dataset for analysis between December 11, 2020 and January 8, 2021. Three different parameters were investigated whether each journal had a preprint policy, whether journals allowed preprint manuscripts to be submitted, and whether preprint articles were allowed to be included in the references. Results Among the 383 Asian academic society journals from 22 countries, only 28 journals accepted preprint manuscripts, and eight allowed the use of preprint manuscripts as references. Japan had the most journals that both had preprint policies and accepted preprint manuscripts, with 13 journals, followed by Korea with 10 journals. Conclusion Despite the limitations of this study, the results show that editors and journal staff should understand the current preprint trend and try to prepare preprint policies that best meet the journals’ and authors’ interests.

Vol.29 No.5

Pseudo-journalism is a highly reductive term in Korea: ‘Journalism but not journalism’, ‘not journalism but journalism’. The current paper therefore took a critical approach towards the regulations on pseudo-journalism. The main results of the current study are as follows. First, a clear-cut division between journalism, seems realistically impossible. Second, current pseudo-journalism regulations do not uphold public duties of broadcasting, such as diversity and fairness, which are the proper purposes of journalism regulation. In fact, the regulation of pseudo-journalism, may be said to have the opposite effect on broadcast diversity. Third, regulation of pseudo-journalism may be considered largely unconstitutional, as it bans freedom of speech at the source. Fourth, it is difficult to conclude that only businesses licensed by broadcast laws are allowed journalism, as the broadcast licensing laws are considered constitutional in Korean society is that they prevent monopoly of public opinion and communication. Fifth, pseudo-journalism regulation is largely arbitrary. It is problematic that current broadcast laws allow the use of enforcement ordinances or announcements to allow journalism in selected channels, and that national institutions can apply pseudo-journalism regulations, very arbitrarily, at any time.

Journal Metrics-Based Position of Diabetes & Metabolism Journal after the Change of Its Text Language to English

2014 Diabetes and Metabolism Journal Vol.38 No.3

After changing its language from Korean or English to English only in 2010, the journal metrics of Diabetes & Metabolism Journal (DMJ) were analyzed to assess whether this change in the journal policy was successful. The journal metric items that were analyzed were the following: impact factor; total citations; countries of authors; proportion of the articles funded out of the total number of original articles; and Hirsch-index (H-index). A retrospective, descriptive analysis was carried out using various databases, such as KoreaMed, Korean Medical Citation Index (KoMCI), KoreaMed Synapse, Web of Science, and Journal Citation Ranking. The journal’s impact factor was 2.054, which corresponds to 83/122 (68.0%) out of the 2012 JCR endocrinology and metabolism category. The number of the journal’s total citations was 330 in 2013. In addition to Korean authors, authors from 13 other countries published papers in the journal from 2010 to 2013. The number of funded papers from 2010 to 2013 was 65 out of 148 original articles (43.9%). The journal’s H-index from KoreaMed Synapse was 7, and that from Web of Science was 9. It can be concluded that changing the journal’s language to English was successful based on journal metrics. DMJ is currently positioned as an international journal based on the international diversity of authors and editors, its sufficiently high proportion of funded articles, its relatively high impact factor, and the number of total citations.

      • The Journalism Crisis in the Era of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Indonesia

Dudi Iskandar,Deddy Mulyana,Sitti Murni Kaddi World Association for Triple Helix and Future Stra 2023 Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia Vol.22 No.2

The focus of this research is the practice of journalism in relation to the Behavioural Change Journalism Fellowship (JFPP) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Journalists and curators who are participants in the Behavioural Change Journalism Fellowship received fundings from the state. The Behavioural Change Journalism Fellowship is a unique model because it is the only one in the world in journalism practice that involves state's financial assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic. These fundings from the state for the media lead to dilemmas and controversies. This research uses a qualitative approach and a single holistic case study method. The Behavioural Change Journalism Fellowship was held from May to December 2021, involving 7,276 journalists from 857 media (print, television, radio, and online media) and 26 curators. This study found that during the Behavioural Change Journalism Fellowship, journalism experienced a crisis and lost its function as a control overpower. Giving cash to journalists and curators during the fellowship makes journalism lose its independence and objectivity. The Behavioural Change Journalism Fellowship has degraded or eliminated the function of the press as a watchdog. Incentives for journalists while participating in the Behavioural Change Journalism Fellowship is a long-term investment by the government to co-opt Indonesian media and journalists in the future. On the other hand, the Behavioural Change Journalism Fellowship raises another aspect; the crisis of journalism. Journalism work produced in the Behavioural Change Journalism Fellowship does not reflect the values and principles of journalism. Journalism values, such as independence and impartiality, are absent from the Behavioural Change Journalism Fellowship product.

Vol.61 No.9

Many medical journals from Korea have advanced to the international level since 1996. This study aims to present the current status of Korean medical journals in scholarly literature databases and to suggest strategies for further development. This study focused on the 261 member journals of the Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors (KAMJE). In 2018, 29 journals from Korea were indexed in Medline, of which 22 were KAMJE journals. Since 2008, Korean medical journals have been deposited in PubMed Central. As of 2018, the number of journals deposited in PubMed Central has soared to 116, including 103 KAMJE journals. Ninety KAMJE journals were indexed in Scopus. The average 2017 impact factor of the 40 Science Citation Index Expanded-indexed KAMJE journals was 2.17. Furthermore, 35 journals have been indexed in the Emerging Sources Citation Index. To promote more medical journals to the international level, the following strategies are suggested: first, recruiting high-quality manuscripts with meticulous review and editing; and second, adopting digital standards of scholarly publishing, including full-text XML, to broaden accessibility. Medical journals from Korea have experienced tremendous success in terms of indexing in international literature databases. To promote journals to the highest level, physicians and researchers should be able to read, submit, cite and use the journal articles in a straightforward and diligent manner. With appropriate development strategies, it may be possible for a Nobel Prize to be awarded based on research published in medical journals in Korea in the near future.

Vol.5 No.3

This paper reviews the literature on journalism ethics education, examines the curriculum of journalism ethics in relevant departments, and investigates the perceptions of journalists on journalism ethics education. The results showed that the proportion of ethics education in journalism studies is significantly low, and out of 70 journalism-related departments in universities, only 45 departments teach media ethics and law, accounting for 64.3%. More often than not, ‘media’was included in the course name rather than ‘press’and most departments taught ‘ethics’and ‘law’in the same course. Prospective journalists pointed to the lack of relevance to the media entrance exam as a problem with media ethics courses, but said that media ethics courses would be the most important after joining the media. The recommendations for improving journalism ethics education proposed in this study are, first, to teach students to distinguish between journalism ethics and the legal system, and second, to share ethical problems encountered by journalists in the field with academics and find solutions, so that the latest cases and solutions can be applied to university classes. Third, we need to find ways to incorporate journalism ethics into journalism entrance exams. If we can increase the weight of journalism ethics in journalism entrance exams, university education will be revitalized, and the number of new journalists who are familiar with journalism ethics will increase, leading to a greater awareness of journalism ethics among all journalists.

Investigation of the effect of cavitation and journal whirl on static and dynamic characteristics of journal bearing

        Dan Sun,Shengyuan Li,Chengwei Fei,Yanting Ai,Rhea. P Liem 대한기계학회 2019 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.33 No.1

The cavitation phenomenon in journal bearing and journal whirl are considered to evaluate the static and dynamic characteristics of journal bearing, to be more consistent with the actual operating conditions of journal bearing. With a 3D CFD method, the cavitation and journal whirl are simulated by adopting mesh deformation technique and mixture phase-change model. By comparing the results with those of the traditional Reynolds equation, we observe that first, the phenomena of cavitation and journal whirl are very consistent with the actual operating conditions of journal bearing. Moreover, for single-phase and two-phase flow models, the distribution features of oil film pressure are similar in convergent wedge zone while largely different in divergent part of the gap. The oil film pressure and vapor phase volume fraction notably vary on different whirl positions of the journal. We also observe that as whirl frequency increases, the oil film force gradually increases and the stability of journal bearing decreases rapidly before reaching a plateau. The efforts of this paper provide an efficient method to accurately evaluate the static and dynamic characteristics of journal bearing and offer a useful insight into the accurate analysis and design of journal bearing.

Vol.43 No.-

Vol.63 No.5

The purpose of this paper is to invigorate discussion on data journalism education. The paper begins with an introduction of data journalism, which can be defined as a journalism practice pertaining to presenting data analysis for stories of interest to the public. The data analysis process for journalism practice, like many data analyses in other disciplines, includes collection, pre-processing, and visualization. After the introduction, the paper gives an overview of the debates on data journalism education: is it imperative to teach it; should it be taught at higher education institutions or elsewhere; should it be an independent course in journalism coursework, or can it be taught within disciplines that do not apply a journalism approach? While there is little consensus on how to teach data journalism and on the depth of data analysis required by journalism students, educators in journalism schools mostly agree that both statistical reasoning and coding skills are gaining ground as independent and essential subjects of the journalism curriculum. The issue here is the lack of teaching materials and human resources of a journalism approach, not the need or demand for data journalism. The paper also reviewed current syllabi for data journalism courses offered by several institutions so as to understand the sequence of data journalism coursework. With the exception of a small number of schools, it was observed that many data journalism courses tend to take the form of data analysis courses, making them indistinguishable from general social science courses. As data journalism education is in its initial stages, more systematic efforts need to be placed in the school education system. A few leading schools have already integrated field work and curriculum materials as capstone projects. Finally, the paper suggested tentative solutions for data journalism education that enriches through undergraduate study, industry practices, and graduate study. To summarize, first, it is suggested that a database system for data journalism education will greatly improve the effectiveness and efficiency of data journalism education. The database system will not only help teachers but also students in a way that provides standardized course materials and examples that everybody in the field can share as common ground. Second, it is also suggested that the data journalism education system needs to be aligned with industry practices, relevant institutions and associations, and academic environment. Previous literature has revealed that professionalism and the cultural heritage of journalism practices have led to diverse trajectories of data journalism education. In this respect, we are encouraged to set up our own system that harmonizes current efforts to grow data journalists in our society, both in and outside the academic setting.
