Since its foundation, the Association of Korean Cultural and Historical Geographers has mainly dealt with the issues such as Koreans' traditional perspectives on geography, perceptions about environment, Korea's history and culture embedded in the cultural landscape, and the restoration of cultural and historical geographical phenomena. During the initial ten years, the active research of th korea's traditional geography of the Association became the well-established area of Korean studies. The following ten years of the Association were devoted to studies of old map, Feng Shui landscape and the building of general system of Korean cultural and historical geography. At the same time, one observes an increase of the studies adopting the cultural and ecological approach as a way to address environmental problems. To connect modern human geography and traditional geography, there have been interdisciplinary studies on toponyms or contemporary diaspora. Young geographers in particular have been trying to use cultural-political or social-economical approaches regarding historical changes in society and culture, and to apply systematic approaches to the formation of culture.
The Shaping and Progress of Korean Historical Geography Since 1945
Vol.47 No.4
Korean historical geography as a distinct subset of modern geography began with the pathbreaking efforts of Do-Yang Roh in the second half of the 1940s. He was joined in 1960 by founding father Dr. Chan Lee who carried with himself the Berkeley geography he learned from Fred Kniffen, his advisor, and Robert West at Louisiana State University. Dr. Lee, the single-most important figure in the development of Korean historical geography, founded in 1988 the Association of Korean Cultural and Historical Geographers in order to pull together those interested in past geographies and geographical change. Korean historical geography took off in the 1980s when large numbers of doctoral theses were produced domestically and abroad and British cross-sectional methodology added. Diversity in research theme and methodology characterizes present-day Korean historical geography.
