Design and Evaluation of a Protection Relay for a Wind Generator Based on the Positive- and Negative-Sequence Fault Components

        Taiying Zheng,Seung-Tae Cha,Yeon-Hee Kim,Peter A. Crossley,Sang Ho Lee,Yong Cheol Kang 대한전기학회 2013 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.8 No.5

To avoid undesirable disconnection of healthy wind generators (WGs) or a wind power plant, a WG protection relay should discriminate among faults, so that it can operate instantaneously for WG, connected feeder or connection bus faults, it can operate after a delay for inter-tie or grid faults, and it can avoid operating for parallel WG or adjacent feeder faults. A WG protection relay based on the positive- and negative-sequence fault components is proposed in the paper. At stage 1, the proposed relay uses the magnitude of the positive-sequence component in the fault current to distinguish faults requiring non-operation response from those requiring instantaneous or delayed operation responses. At stage 2, the fault type is first determined using the relationships between the positive- and negative-sequence fault components. Then, the relay differentiates between instantaneous operation and delayed operation based on the magnitude of the positive-sequence fault component. Various fault scenarios involving changes in position and type of fault and faulted phases are used to verify the performance of the relay. This paper concludes by implementing the relay on a hardware platform based on a digital signal processor. Results indicate that the relay can successfully distinguish the need for instantaneous, delayed, or non-operation.

        Least Square Method

        Bilawal Rehman,Chongru Liu,Lili Wang 대한전기학회 2017 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.12 No.1

This paper proposes a novel approach to determine symmetrical components of power system by applying method of least squares in time domain. For the modern power system stability, clearance of faults on high voltage transmission lines in zero response time is crucial and important. Symmetrical components have a great attention since last century. They have been found an effective tool for the analysis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults in power system. Moreover, magnitude of symmetrical components are also used as a caution about faults in system. With rapid changes in technology, Microprocessor assumed to be fastest machine of the modern era. Hence microprocessor based techniques were developed and implemented for last few decades. The proposed technique apply least square method in the computation of symmetrical components which is suitable as an application in microprocessor based monitoring and controlling power system in order to avoid cascading failures. Simulation of proposed model is carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK and all results exploit the validity of model.

Fast Extraction of Symmetrical Components from Distorted Three-Phase Signals Based on Asynchronous-Rotational Reference Frame

Hao, Tianqu,Gao, Feng,Xu, Tao The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2019 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.19 No.4

A symmetrical component decomposition scheme utilizing the characteristics of the asynchronous rotational reference frame transformation is proposed in this paper for the extraction of the positive and negative sequence components of distorted three-phase grid voltages. The undesired frequency component can be removed using a specially designed series coordinate transformation and half-cycle delays, where the delay can be controlled by adjusting the frequency of the rotating reference frame. The extracted symmetrical component can then be compensated based on the applied coordinated transformation. The dynamic response of the proposed algorithm is improved when compared to that of conventional methods. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulation and experimental results.

Extended Center-Symmetric Pattern과 2D-PCA를 이용한 얼굴인식

        이현구,김동주 (사)디지털산업정보학회 2013 디지털산업정보학회논문지 Vol.9 No.2

Face recognition has recently become one of the most popular research areas in the fields of computer vision, machine learning, and pattern recognition because it spans numerous applications, such as access control, surveillance, security, credit-card verification, and criminal identification. In this paper, we propose a simple descriptor called an ECSP(Extended Center-Symmetric Pattern) for illumination-robust face recognition. The ECSP operator encodes the texture information of a local face region by emphasizing diagonal components of a previous CS-LBP(Center-Symmetric Local Binary Pattern). Here, the diagonal components are emphasized because facial textures along the diagonal direction contain much more information than those of other directions. The facial texture information of the ECSP operator is then used as the input image of an image covariance-based feature extraction algorithm such as 2D-PCA(Two-Dimensional Principal Component Analysis). Performance evaluation of the proposed approach was carried out using various binary pattern operators and recognition algorithms on the Yale B database. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed approach achieved better recognition accuracy than other approaches, and we confirmed that the proposed approach is effective against illumination variation.

A Novel Fast Open-loop Phase Locking Scheme Based on Synchronous Reference Frame for Three-phase Non-ideal Power Grids

Xiong, Liansong,Zhuo, Fang,Wang, Feng,Liu, Xiaokang,Zhu, Minghua,Yi, Hao The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2016 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.16 No.4

Rapid and accurate phase synchronization is critical for the reliable control of grid-tied inverters. However, the commonly used software phase-locked loop methods do not always satisfy the need for high-speed and accurate phase synchronization under severe grid imbalance conditions. To address this problem, this study develops a novel open-loop phase locking scheme based on a synchronous reference frame. The proposed scheme is characterized by remarkable response speed, high accuracy, and easy implementation. It comprises three functional cascaded blocks: fast orthogonal signal generation block, fast fundamental-frequency positive sequence component construction block, and fast phase calculation block. The developed virtual orthogonal signal generation method in the first block, which is characterized by noise immunity and high accuracy, can effectively avoid approximation errors and noise amplification in a wide range of sampling frequencies. In the second block, which is the foundation for achieving fast phase synchronization within 3 ms, the fundamental-frequency positive sequence components of unsymmetrical grid voltages can be achieved with the developed orthogonal signal construction strategy and the symmetrical component method. The real-time grid phase can be consequently obtained in the third block, which is free from self-tuning closed-loop control and thus improves the dynamic performance of the proposed scheme. The proposed scheme is adaptive to severe unsymmetrical grid voltages with sudden changes in magnitude, phase, and/or frequency. Moreover, this scheme is able to eliminate phase errors induced by harmonics and random noise. The validity and utility of the proposed scheme are verified by the experimental results.

      • Transient analyses using symmetrical component calculus in three-phase resistive and transformer-type SFCLs

        Cho, Y.S.,Choi, H.S.,Jung, B.I. North-Holland 2010 Physica. C, Superconductivity Vol.470 No.20

A transformer-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) can control fault current by adjusting a turn's ratio of the primary and secondary windings. In addition, by inserting a neutral line into the secondary winding, the power burden of the superconducting elements can be evenly distributed. We compared the operating and transient characteristics of the three-phase resistive and transformer-type SFCLs in the balanced and unbalanced faults that occur in power systems. In transformer-type SFCLs, where the primary and secondary windings of each phase were connected to one iron core, flux was induced to each winding of the normal phases by the fault current of the fault phase, thus causing simultaneous quench between superconducting elements. In the three-phase power systems, however, when faults occurred in more than two phases, the flux from fault current of the fault phase affected the other normal phase, thus decreasing the reduction ratio of fault current. We confirmed, however, that the fault current was reduced by 70% relative to cases without SFCLs. The results of the analysis of the transient characteristics of the three-phase transformer-type SFCL through the symmetrical component calculus showed that in the case of triple line-to-ground fault, a difference between positive and negative phase currents was large enough to cause an increase in the phase angle (δ) between the generator creating the power and the motor acting as a load. Thus, we expect that the transient stability deteriorates.

태양광발전이 연계된 배전계통의 보호기기 오동작에 대한 최적 운용방안에 관한 연구

        김찬혁(Chan-Hyeok KIM),박현석(Hyeon-Seok Park),노대석(Dea-Seok Rho),신창훈(Chang-Hoon Shin),윤기갑(Gigab Yoon) 대한전기학회 2009 전기학회논문지 Vol.58 No.8

Recently, new dispersed power sources such as photovoltaics, wind power, fuel cell etc. are energetically interconnected and operated in the distribution systems, as one of the national projects for alternative energy. This paper deals with the optimal countermeasures for the mal-function of protective devices at primary feeder in distribution systems when new power sources like photovoltaic (PV) systems are interconnected, based on the symmetrical components of short circuit studies. When new power sources are considered to be interconnected to distribution systems, bi-directional power flow and interconnection transformer connection of new power sources may cause the operation problems of protective devices (mainly re-closer), since new power sources can change typical characteristics of distribution systems. Therefore, this paper shows an analysis skill of the mal-functional mechanism of protective relay and proposes the optimal solution for the mal-function problem using the symmetrical components of fault analysis. And, this paper also shows the effectiveness of proposed method by the simulation at the field distribution systems.
