        Haftarot for the Appointed Times: The Pentecost in Light of the Passover and the Days of Awe

        Since antiquity, public recitation from the five books of Moses and the prophetic literature has been considered a central feature of Jewish communal worship. The present article investigates the lectionary portions from the Hebrew prophets (haftarah) in relation to those from the Torah (parashah) for the Israelite festivals in the Babylonian annual cycle. Particular focus will be given to the lectionary pairs preceding and following the Pentecost/Feast of Weeks, namely the parashah and haftarah for the Passover/Unleavened Bread and the Days of Awe/Day of Atonement. The cumulative impact of these consecutive readings is that the Pentecost is to be associated not only with the Mosaic receipt of the Torah on Mt. Sinai, but also with various aspects of Israel’s encounter with YHWH from the exodus to Moses’ final ascent of Mt. Sinai. The correlations between the texts can be traced at various levels with key terms and concepts, accentuating the themes of judgment, salvation, restoration, and renewal. The synchronic consideration of the Jewish lectionary entries surrounding the Pentecost offers a profound experience of probing into ancient exegetical insights and a fresh vantage point for contemporary Christians to appreciate the Pentecostal events in the New Testament.

        누가공동체의 성령이해의 기원

        What made Lukan community to have their own understanding of the Holy Spirit? On this question, many scholars have concentrated on the social and religious background of Lukan community such as Old Testament, Judaism, Gnosticism, and Hellenism. However, Acts 19:2 shows us that most of people who lived under Jewish and Hellenistic background in the first century did not have specific concept of the Holy Spirit (and he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spiht.”). So, we can not easily accept that Luke‘s understanding about Holy Spiht was derived from directly background of Old Testament or Hellenism. This article is an exegetical study of Acts 2:1-4 that is the key text, I believe, to find the origin of Luk’'s understanding on the Holy Spirit. The main reason or origin to have specific understanding of the Holy Spirit to Lukan community was special ‘experience’ that they had on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). What happened on that day? Acts 2:1-4, Luke‘s first description about being filled with the Holy Spirit, is composed with fact and interpretation. The only fact that disciples of Jesus experienced actually on Pentecost was that ’they spoke in other tongues‘(Acts 2:4b). When disciples had experience of speaking tongues, they must have been very surprised. After that, they must have needed theological explanation on this mysterious experience. And Eventually, they must have interpreted speaking Glossolalia as the result of fullness of the Holy Spirit naturally because they were waiting for the promise of Jesus that “you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”(Acts 1:5). The Lukan community's pneumatology was started and affected by this interpretation and developed on the basis of this interpretation.

        『아서 왕의 죽음』에서 토마스 말로리의 교회력 사용 연구

        Le Morte D'arthur(1470?) has been considered as Sir. Thomas Malory’s successful creative adaptation of various original sources. Based on the French, German and even English alliterative original sources, Malory’s narrative deals with diverse popular subjects of the Middle Ages such as chivalry, courtly love, feudal society, and the quest of a holy grail, etc. Despite this thematic diversity, the overall theme of Le Morte D’arthur had been regarded as the rise and fall of Arthur’s kingdom since William Caxton published Le Morte D’arthur(1485). However, these appraisals were challenged by Eugene Venaver who declared in his preface to The Complete Works of Sir. Thomas Malory(1970) that Malory’s narrative is just composed of “a series of books.” Since Vinaver’s edition was published, controversial studies on thematic unity of Le Morte D’arthur have been pursued among medieval scholars. One of the critical issues is about the thematic correlation and causality between the quest of earthly chivalric ideals, and the quest of the holy grail, which represents heavenly salvation through sufferings and penance. This essay discusses Malory's use of the Christian calendar in structuring his narrative of the rise and fall of Arthur’s kingdom. This study also demonstrates how his use of the Christian calendar including liturgical elements, such as Eucharist, contributes to the thematic correlation and causality of the narrative of Le Morte D’arthur.
