과거 중국역사에서 出仕와 隱逸사이에서 갈등하다가 과감하게 은일을 택한 대표적인 인물 중 하나가 바로 東晋의 陶淵明이었다. 도연명은 歸去來한 心遠의 정황을『귀거래사』에 진솔하게 표현하는데, 南田 元仲植은 이런 도연명의 귀거래 한 삶을 본받고자 하였다. 남전이 즐겨 쓴 문구 중에는 虛靜한 심령을 반영하는‘閑’자, ‘虛’자, ‘靜’자를 비롯하여 ‘무엇 너머’라는 의미의‘外’자, ‘세속적 가치 있음이란 것이 없다’는 의미의‘無’자 등이 많이 보인다. 이런 단어들은 바로 心遠의 은일적 삶을 반영한다. 이같은 남전의 ‘도연명 따라 하기’는 서예의 입장에서 볼 때, 心遠에서 출발한 참된 서예를 통해 자신의 존재 이유를 밝히고자 한 還我의 서예미학이었다. 남전은 ‘환아정신’에서 출발하여 爲己之學으로서의 서예를 실천하고자 하였다. 남전의 筆隱 지향적 삶은 ‘山靜日長’에 담긴 無事의 虛靜한 은일적 삶으로 이어진다. 남전은 은일적 삶을 ‘閑’자를 통해 압축적으로 보여주는 많은 시를 통해 寓意하고자 한다. 아울러 다양한 禪詩를 통해 세속적인 공명에 얽매이지 않고 우주대자연에 자유롭게 逍遙自在하고자 하는 정신경지를 추구하고 있다. 남전은 최종적으로 “物外遊, 心無累”의 逍遙自在의 경지를 붓과 함께 하고자 했다. 기교의 工拙 與否를 따지는 것에서 벗어나 자신의 천연의 본성을 붓에 담아 자유롭게 펼치고자 하였다. 이같은 사유는 궁극적으로 ‘서예란 무엇인가’에 대한 남전의 답으로 이어졌다. 바로 인문예술로서의 서예인식과 逸格 지향의 서예정신이었다. In Chinese history, there are characters who have lived a life of seclusion. For example, TaoYuanMing is an example. After returning to his hometown, TaoYuanMing lives a secular and disconnected life in his mind. Nan Tian(南田), YuanZhongzhi(元仲植) is a calligrapher who lived in modern Korea. He wanted to live a life of this kind. He made his calligraphy work as a favorite work with phrases expressing a leisurely life, a quiet life, and a life in a secular world. These phrases reflect the world of life he intended. The calligraphy creation of the following expression along the line of TaoYuanMing was an effort to find the lost figure of oneself. He sought to spread his true calligraphy world through his search for the lost self. His seclusion-oriented life was a life in which he did not want to be secular, and expressed his life as his work. He tried to express his seclusion in terms of leisure. In addition, he tried to express his own seclusion through various poems of the Buddhist scent. And to express his freedom through his poetry that is not bound by secular honor and desire. The spiritual world without any bounds and no hanging on objects was the calligraphy spirit he intended. This spirit of art was an understanding of calligraphy in humanities and an artistic spirit that wanted to bring free souls. When he created an artwork, he did not care about the goodness and the badness of artistry, and hr wanted to freely open his own artistic sensibility.
