고려시대 신정왕태후 황보씨의 위상 변화 - 왕실 근친혼과 관련하여 -

신정왕태후 황보씨는 황주 호족 황보제공의 딸로 태조의 후비가 되었다. 그 후 딸은 광종 비 대목왕후로, 외손자는 경종으로, 친손녀 2명은 경종의비로, 그리고 마침내 친손자는 성종으로 즉위하게 된다. 이처럼 신정왕태후 황보씨는 태조에서 성종대까지 왕실과 오랫동안 관련을 맺고 살았던 고려초기의 왕실여성이다. 그러나 그의 태후로서의 지위는 아들이 왕위에 올라 얻은 것이 아니라 신정왕태후 자신의 노력을 바탕으로 얻어진 것임을 알 수 있다. 비록 태조의 비가 되었지만 왕에게는 29명의 후비가 있었기에, 그는 여러 후비 중의한 사람일 뿐이었다. 『고려사』에는 신정왕태후라고 기록되어 있지만, 태조대 그녀의 위상은 황주원부인으로 그리 높은 편은 아니었다. 이런 신정왕태후는 태조가 죽은 후 미망인으로 40년을 살면서 계속해서 왕실과 연결을 맺고 있는데, 그 중심에 왕실 근친혼이 자리하고 있다. 먼저 딸이 광종과 이복남매간 혼인하였다. 딸은 광종의 왕비가 되었고, 이로써 신정왕태후는 외척의 지위에 있게 된다. 이를 바탕으로 간접적인 정치적 역할이 보이고, 가정과 가문을 위해 중요한 역할을 하였다. 특히 할머니로서 손자손녀를 양육하고 교육하는 일을 하였고, 광종의 억압으로 어려운 처지에 있던 외손자 경종을 돌보는 일에도 관여한다. 광종이 죽고 외손자 경종이 즉위하자. 신정왕태후의 역할은 좀 더 적극적인 면을 보이고 있는 듯하다. 경종은 반광종정책을 펴는데, 그 배후에 신정왕태후의 역할이 있었음을 짐작케 한다. 또한 자신의 친손자손녀들의 결혼에도 집안의 어른으로서 주도적인 역할을 한 것으로 보인다. 2명의 친손녀들이 경종과 혼인하고, 친손자 성종은 외손녀이며 경종의 누이인 문덕왕후와 혼인하고 있는데, 이 과정에 신정왕태후의 적극적인 면이 있었을 것으로 보인다. 경종은 외할머니 신정왕태후의 호칭을 황주원부인에서 명복궁부인으로 승격시켜주었다. 그리고 죽음에 이르자 후계를 사촌동생 성종에게 넘기게 된다. 이로서 친손자가 왕위에 즉위하게 되었다. 황보씨는 손자 즉위 후 2년째 되는 해 별세하게 되는데, 성종이 내린 시호가 신정왕태후였던 것이다. 따라서 신정왕태후로 불리는 것은 아들이 왕위에 올라 자동으로 얻어진 칭호라기보다, 여러 과정을 거쳐 특히 왕실 근친혼을 통해 마침내 친손자가 왕위에 오르는데 기여함으로서 얻은 칭호라는 것을 알 수 있다. 이런 과정을 통해 간접적이나마 신정왕태후의 정치적 영향력을 알 수 있으며, 적극적인 삶을 살았던 왕실 여성의 일면을 볼 수 있다. This is a study on the changes of the empress dowager Shin-jung`s status. In general, an empress dowager means the mother of the king, but her son was not the king. In this research, I would like to explain how she had gotten the title of the empress dowager Shin-jung. She was a daughter of Hwangbo Jegong(皇甫悌恭), who had been a local strongman in Hwangju, later she became one of 29 wives of King Taejo. Yet, she could not the queen consort or the mother of the crown prince, so her status was not high enough during the King Taejo period. The daughter of the empress dowager married Wang So(王昭), a step-brother. After Wang So succeed to the throne after King Jungjong, and became King Gwangjong, the fourth king. Because of her daughter, she became a mother-in-law of Gwangjong. Due to the royal marriage, it was possible that she have been treated as the mother of the queen consort during King Gwangjong period. Based on her status, she tried to influence in politics through the queen consort, her daughter. At the same time, she was also able to take care of her grandchildren who had lost their parents. During King Kyongjong period, she became the maternal grandmother of the king. Because of the relationships, perhaps she might have been influential to the king in politics, especially in marriages. King Kyongjong already had wives, but he married two more wives who were granddaughters of the empress dowager. In addition, the king`s sister married her cousin who was the empress dowager`s grandson. These couples were the empress dowager`s grandchildren on her daughter`s side and son`s. King Kyongjong gave her the name of the Madam of Myongbok -palace to show his gratitude to her. At last, her grandson on her son`s side succeed to the throne as the sixth king. King Sungjong gave her a title called the empress dowager Shin-jung after she died. Her titles were Madame of Hwangju-won and Madame of Myongbok-palace during her life. She had tried to match her children and grandchildren with step-siblings and cousins in the royal house. As a result of her efforts through the consanguineous marriage, her grandson could have become a king, and she also became an empress dowager after death. Therefore, the title called the empress dowager Shin-jung was obtained from her efforts.
