Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bleaching effect of 3% hydrogen peroxide containing strip with primer in vivo. Methods: 22 female subjects aged from 20 to 39 years old were recruited after informed consent. They were divided into two groups with control and experimental group. Experimental group was bleached with 3% HP strip with primer, and control group received placebo for 14 days. Color changes were measured with Shade Eye-NCC (Shade Eye-NCC, SHOFU Co., Japan), Shade guide (VITA classical shade guide, VIDENTTM, CA, USA) and digital camera image. All collected data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. Results: At baseline, L* was 71.75±3.2 and b* was 14.90±3.6 in control, and L* was 71.3±3.4 and b* was 15.61±3.7 in experimental group. At day 14, L* was 71.35±3.2 and b* was 13.97±4.3 in control, and L* was 73.51±2.0, b* was 9.10±3.0 in experimental group. ΔE* of all teeth were statistically significant between the two groups. Final ΔE* was 7.15±2.09 at experimental group and 2.78±2.93 at control group, and the difference was significant (p<0.005). Color changes using shade guide also significantly decreased at 14th day compared with baseline at experimental group (p<0.005). Conclusions: 3% hydrogen peroxide strip with primer revealed effective enough to bleaching the human enamel during 14 days without any soft and hard tissue irritations.

A laboratory trial was conducted to evaluate post-treatment color improvement following bleaching with 2.6% hydrogen peroxide containing tooth-whitening strip. Hydroxyapatite tablet(HPT) was made by compressing and sintering 2.5 g hydroxyapatite powder. HPTs were embedded in epoxy resin except active surface. This active surface was stained using Stookey' s methods. Bleaching materials were 2.6% hydrogen peroxide strip, 5,3% hydrogen peroxide strip(Crest^ Whitestips), 2.6% hydrogen peroxide solution, and placebo strip without hydrogen peroxide. HPTs were allocated to each bleaching materials by matching on color grade. After HPTs were treated for 30 minutes at 37℃ and washed and dried, color was measured by Colorimeter CR-321 (Minolta, Japan). The efficacy was evaluated by comparing delta L and delta E_ab values of HPTs surface at baseline and each repeated steps. There was no change of L' value in placebo strip. Each delta L* and delta E'ab values of 2.6% hydrogen peroxide strip, 5.3% hydrogen peroxide strip(Crest Whitestips), and 2.6% hydrogen peroxide solution was increased significantly compared to baseline and placebo strip, respectively (P<0.05). There was no significant change in delta L and delta E_ab values among 2.6% hydrogen peroxide strip, 5.3% hydrogen peroxide strip(Crest^ Whitestips), and 2.6% hydrogen peroxide solution. Whitening effect of 2.6% hydrogen peroxide strip was fairly high compared to 5.3% hydrogen peroxide strip in this in vitro experiment, but further in vivo experiment is needed to prove its efficacy.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of self-applied 2.6% hydrogen peroxide containing tooth-whitening strips. The safety and efficacy of a 2.6% hydrogen peroxide strip tooth-whitening procedure were evaluated in a double blind experimental design. One hundred young adults were randomly assigned to experimental(55 persons) and placebo control groups(45 persons) by matching on color of teeth, smoking habit, gender and perception level of their teeth color. The subjects of both experimental and placebo groups were treated to a 14-day regimen in which strips were applied to six upper anterior teeth twice per day for 30 minutes under supervision. The efficacy was evaluated by comparing the brightness of tooth surface at baseline, 5 days, 10 days, and 15 days. The brightness of tooth was measured with VITAPAN classical(Vita Zahnfabrik, Germany). Discomfort and hypersensitivity was evaluated by self-administered questionnaire. Eighty-five subjects(43 experimental and 42 placebo) passed through experiments. The experimental group experienced a highly significant improvement in brightness of teeth color relative to baseline and placebo(P<.01). Rate of subjects whose brightness of teeth color enhanced was significantly higher in experimental group(P<.01). Twenty-three percent of experimental group felt tolerable level of gingival irritation. Tooth-whitening strips with 2.6% hydrogen peroxide was effective for improving brightness of tooth color and was more convenient and safe to use than tray-based method.
