The term of dramaturg was introduced 20 years ago in Korea. But we are not accustumed to the concept of the dramaturg. The role of the dramaturg has its roots in the practice of mainland German theatre. Since the major intellects appointed Gotthold Lessing as the world`s first officially dramaturg, a dramaturgs has been considered as a person to direct plays, translate foreign dramas, commission works, prepare essays for inclusion in theatre programs, and usher. Then dramaturg across Europe continue to debate their function and possible functions within the theatre, while being employed across a range of performance forms and theatre development activities. The meaning of the terms dramaturg is relative and determined by the particular cultures and institutions in which individuals operate, and the function of dramaturg depends on the ecomomic and political conditions of production. But there is only one fixed point; dramaturgs have played important role in the reform of theatre. In this paper, I gave weight to view the history of dramaturg mainly in Germany. I treated the case of Lessing, Goethe, Brecht in Germany and Tynan in England. Especially I tried focus on the social and political functions of the dramaturg. There are two issues relevant to political tendency of the dramaturg. For one thing, dramaturg is related to a political ideology, and for another, dramaturg acts as a mediator. Since the 20th century, dramaturgs were working actively in the political theatre. Especially Brecht`s dramaturgy stresses the relationship between a work and its social context, and he wanted to contribute to a social reform by making revolutionary theatre. Brecht`s influence is remarkable on European political theatre of the 1960s and 1970s. A dramaturg must perform a delicate balancing act between different sides in the conflict. (ex. art and policy, theory and practice) In the process, dramaturg often experience reconciliation and conflict. The role of dramaturg all depends on the circumstances, but it is obvious that work for development of the theater is the essential role of dramaturg. Therefore, the contemporary dramaturgs should have an eye for beauty to find out characters of our theatre, and the dramaturg should reflect the spirit of the age at working in the contemporary theatre. 드라마투르그라는 용어가 한국에 소개된 지 20년이 되었지만 그 개념은 여전히 생소하다. 드라마투르그의 역할은 독일의 극장 관행에 뿌리를 두고 있다. 레싱이 최초의 공식 드라마투르그로 임명된 이래 드라마투르그는 희곡을 쓰거나 번역을 하고, 공연을 중개하며, 프로그램 북에 글을 쓰고, 연극을 안내하는사람으로 알려져 왔다. 유럽 전역에서 공연과 극장 업무에 드라마투르그를 고용하면서 그 역할에 대한 논의는 계속되었다. 드라마투르그라는 용어는 문화와 제도에 따라 그 의미가 다르게 해석된다. 공연 제작의 경제적, 정치적 여건에 따라 그 역할도 달라진다. 드라마투르그의역할 중 변하지 않는 것이 있다면, 드라마투르그는 역사적으로 연극개혁에 앞장서 왔다는 것이다. 이 논문은 독일을 중심으로 드라마투르그의 역사를 조망하는 데 비중을 두었다. 레싱, 괴테, 브레히트, 그리고 영국의 타이넌의 사례를 고찰했다. 특히 드라마투르그의 정치 사회적 기능에 주목하고자 했다. 드라마투르그의 정치적경향은 두 가지로 나누어 볼 수 있는데, 하나는 정치 이데올로기와의 관련성이고 다른 하나는 매개자로서의 역할이다. 20세기 이후, 일련의 정치극 공연에 드라마투르그가 활발히 참여했다. 특히 브레히트의 드라마투르기는 작품과 사회적 맥락의 관계를 중시했다. 브레히트는 혁명적인 연극을 만들어 사회 개혁에기여하고자 했는데, 그의 영향은 1960, 70년대 유럽 정치극에서 두드러진다. 드라마투르그는 또한 서로 다른 입장들 사이에서 양자를 중재하여 균형을 유지해야 한다. 그 과정에서 드라마투르그는 예술과 정책, 현장과 이론 사이의 매개자로서 충돌과 화해의 과정을 겪게 된다. 드라마투르그의 역할은 상황에 따라 다르다. 하지만 연극의 발전을 위한 업무가 그 본질인 것만은 분명하다. 그러므로 동시대 드라마투르그가 해야 할 일은 우리 연극의 빈틈을 발견할 수 있는 안목을 갖추어야 하며, 더불어 시대성을 지닌 연극관을 가져야 한다.
