Through this study, I explored a creation of the postmodern furniture aesthetics through the transformation by student's interpretation in experiencing the art/craft/handmade/studio furniture aesthetics in postmodernism theoretically for 'wood culture experience class' or 'wood love experience class' by the Korea Forest Service because the class tends to focus on making simple wood works involved just in the practical part. Qualitative conceptual analysis as the principal methodology was used to achieve the theoretical context in the experience programs. Following the lesson one on defining the postmodern aesthetics in New Design furniture as metaphor and the lesson two on interpreting an aesthetics of art and everyday life with the wood furniture which expresses the metaphorical and symbolical aesthetics appeared as New Design furniture in postmodernism in the previous papers, I developed lesson three on creating an object using eco-friendly materials like wood in transforming an aesthetics of postmodern furniture as the final stage of the study. Therefore, the students will be able to create a piece of eco-friendly wood furniture for our environment as metaphor transformed by his/her perspective regarding a piece of selected New Design furniture.
A Study on Furniture Design for Disassembly

Modernity which is superficial phenomenon set off the mass scale for mass consumption and provide uniformly artificial environment. But natural destruction, environment pollution, resources exhaustion and so on has been caused by this and now ecology is threatened by destruction and damage beyond the limitation and human beings survival is even threatened. Accordingly furniture development for environment preservation considered environment problem is the urgent real situation. Recent paradigm is the concept of Eco-design which is the green design possible to live together in symbiosis, and new types of alternative furniture are needed in Korea as well. 'Furniture for disassembly' is presented as new method for alternative furniture. Furniture for disassembly can be presented by mainly two directions. The first main characteristic is what is assembled by the use of woodworking joints technique as an assembly structure system without any hardware. The second is what is presented as the structure possible to be assembled by simple manual tools with hardware without any glue. The advantages of furniture for disassembly are environment preservation, space application, transportation efficiency and shapeliness. In manufacture method which is different from present furniture, the application of traditional truss technique which uses various types of custom-made and connection technique in case of assemble structure system without hardware is the typical differences. This assembly method expects not only interest induction about assembly and disassembly of diagram per sub materials but also the development of emotion, the improvement of collaboration, space perception ability and shape sense, the improvement of solid body structure insight and so on, when it use in the furniture for children with the application to many kinds of structure with BANGDOOSANJ (Wedged), JUMUGJANGBU (Dovetail) or NABIEUNJANG (Dovetail Keys) and so on.

This study is intended to forecast changes in Ubiquitous technology-based residential environment since the digital revolution so as to suggest the direction of furniture design in the near future. Among Ubiquitous technologies, the intelligent digital technology applied to a residential environment is defined as "Smart Digital Technology." Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy named the residential environment where such technology is applied "Smart Home." Smart Home is strategically creating intelligent residential environment where interactivity is made between human, furniture and residential environment, based on home automation, home network and intelligent sensor technology. Smart furniture is based on strategic characteristics of smart home. Its convergence with IT equipments is being made. Largely, smart furniture has three characteristics as below: First, smart furniture provides users with information on home management, health management, education and fashion. not just functioning as storage space. Second, smart furniture that is a new lifestyle pattern will suggest a new aesthetic standard based on unsettled shapes and innovative structure. Finally, it gives convenience to users intelligently. Namely, smart furniture, "intelligent informative furniture", will be suggested as a new paradigm.
A Study on the Technique and Process of Bending Wood

Materials are such an important factor in designing furniture. Wood is the biggest part of furniture materials. While wood is soft, eco-friendly and natural material, it is variable because it is characterized by severe expansion and contraction. Thus, if the changeable characteristic of wood is not considered in furniture design, the good design of furniture cannot be produced. As one of the skills dealing with woods, bending is such a useful way for making various forms of furniture. While it has been used in furniture-making for a long time, wood processing techniques like steaming bending, bending with ammonia and high frequency bending has been advanced. As wood is a viscoelastic material and has some plasticity, beautiful curves can be created when force is applied. Therefore this paper studies the types of bending methods for furniture and each characteristic of them. Furthermore, this study classifies wood process according to suitability for mass production or small-scale production and researches the proper wood process by the forms and the way of furniture production. Also this study aims to help furniture designers and cabinet makers with wood bending.

As statement of objective in the second lesson, I explored that students in elementary schools personally transform and interpret the postmodern aesthetics of New Design furniture metaphorically with the meanings of symbol. As a result, the students will be able to write about the aesthetics of New Design furniture as metaphor in interpretation transformed by his/her perspective of a piece of selected New Design furniture.

In line with the government's policies for localization, furniture industry in the northern area in Gyeoggi-province at presence has been operated by several furniture industrial complexes in the region in small scale, but now it should be considered from overall view of furniture industry in order to develop more competitive industry. As a matter of this fact, Gyeonggi-province should be engaged in planning to make various industrial clusters of the furniture-related industry based on the northern area of province at structural as well as politic aspects, with the help of the analyzed status of the current furniture industry in region, in supporting them by the systemized policies and developing the overall program to foster furniture as an international-competitive industry. Therefore this study suggested 'furniture industry center' which will exclusively handle and maintain the network of each furniture company in the northern area of Gyeonggi-province and 'high-tech furniture industry complex' to keep pace with the globalization and to be competitive internationally and also 'common brand business' for the cooperation at technical phase. In order to realize and vitalize such suggestions, it is urgently necessary that the network consists of the furniture companies and the expert of the related department in local universities as the main body for furniture industry, of course Gyeonggi-province as well.

The history repeatedly shows that designers have sought their creative inspiration from fine arts. <Stool with Partitions 1,2,3> was also influenced by contemporary art such as surrealism or installment works. This thesis aims to examine the inter-relationship between contemporary art and contemporary furniture design with examples of organic modernism and minimalism furniture design. Also, <Stool with Partitions 1,2,3> will be analyzed in light of such interdisciplinary relationship, explaining the significances of <Stool with Partitions 1,2,3> in scholastic perspective. The previous research analysis of finding out examples of how fine art and design sought mutual exchanges to develop will help to examine the significance of <Stool with Partitions 1,2,3> in the context of art history. This analysis could be used as an important academic material to understand the origin and characteristics of modern design furniture. The features of surrealism and minimalism will be discussed in light of their influences on and interactive relationship with organic modernism furniture design. This provides important basic material to further analyze <Stool with Partitions 1,2,3>. Furthermore, the artistic language and plastic features of contemporary sculptors and installment artists such as Jean Arp, Richard Serra and Anish Kapoor will be examined to show how <Stool with Partitions 1,2,3> integrated and combined main features of those artists. <Stool with Partitions 1,2,3> extracted cognitive and phenomenological aspects from Serra's works that overwhelm viewers with their massive scales. Somewhat abstract yet somewhat primitive and dynamic features of Arp's works was also referred to <Stool with Partitions 1,2,3>. <Stool with Partitions 1,2,3> are made of FRP, composed of three partitions and six stools. This work was analyzed in aspect of form, composition and function. They have organic and flexible formations with free composition availability which endow free disassemble and arrangement. Also, they have cognitive features as of small elements are freely dispersed upon spaces to bestow certain presences. Based on this, this thesis could develop scholastic researches that examine the mutual and interactive relationship between contemporary art and furniture design with much more detailed discussions and examples.

This study explored the literature review for intending to make contemporary furniture expressed as postmodern aesthetics accessible to the broadest possible public, particularly through an examination and realization of art and everyday life, using qualitative analysis about the related literature as the principal methodology. The postmodern furniture aesthetics of communication expressed through double-coding, which was seen by Charles Jencks as the defining element of Post-Modernism, is characterized by the use of ideas from the traditions of craft. Hence, I dealt with pre-Modern furniture and Modern-furniture aesthetics as the background of postmodern furniture called New design furniture. As a result, contemporary furniture called New design furniture represented the use of ornament, craftsmanship, or beauty from the traditions of craft, which was a main source for communication value in postmodern furniture aesthetics.

The joinery technique, as one of manufacturing techniques for the wooden furniture, influences the production process, the economic efficiency, and the diversification of design. Especially, the usage of machine tools can determine how much the students can enhance their design expression capabilities during the practice class in furniture design courses of domestic universities, in accordance with whether to utilize the machine tools or not, and how much and frequent to use the machine tools. The study proved that the joinery techniques, based on the high-tech machine, has more efficiencies in the various aspects, including the easiness to manufacture the products, and the diversity of design than the joinery technique, based on the handcraft-only. As the ground of this, this study estimated the time to produce the wooden furniture by machine tools and by handcraft-only, each. Also, this study show the comparison of the features of three different joinery techniques. On the basis of this comparison, this study made the conclusion that the machine-based joinery technique, which is used in the practice class, is the best method to bring the best results in manufacturing the wooden furniture.
Color Evaluation of Commercial Domestic Hardwoods (I)

Examined the color of ten species of Korean broadleaf trees were experimented based on $L^*a^*b^*$ values and color difference (${\Delta}E^*ab$) between sapwood and heartwood, in order to analyze and determine the color, a critical visual and decorative factor of the broadleaf trees that can be used for making woodcraft and furniture. According to the result, the entire sapwood and heartwood, except the heartwood of Populus tomentiglandulosa, showed positive value in whiteness, redness, and yellowness and therefore contained yellow and red. None of the species showed color difference between sapwood and heartwood that was trace (0~0.5), slight (0.6~1.5), or very much; whereas Populus maximowiczii showed noticeable color difference (1.5~3.0); Salix koreensis, Betula platyphylla var japonica, Carpinus laxiflora, and Castanea crenata, appreciable and Populus tomentiglandulosa, Juglans mandshurica, Betula schmidtii, Alnus japonica, and Quercus variabilis, much. The color characteristics of heartwood and sapwood of the ten Korean broadleaf tree species studied in this research can be used as basic data for woodcraft or furniture production, especially when replacing foreign woods with Korean ones, and also contribute to convergence researches for science, engineering, and design fields.
