Vol.1 No.-

This article focuses on “Collection of Cardinal Kim” and examines his thoughts and concerns about the situation of division of the Korean Peninsula. Cardinal Kim stresses that if our South Korean society really wants to defeat communism, it should review and reflect on all parts of our society. For Cardinal Kim, the concept of peace is not simply a state without war. This is because, like the Korean Peninsula, the country is divided into two Koreas and confronting each other over a gun knife cannot be considered peaceful. Therefore, helping the starving North Korean compatriots out of Kims personal heart was without other preconditions because they were our compatriots, brothers and family members. I thought such a figure could ultimately serve as a foundation for establishing peace in Christ on the Korean Peninsula.

Vol.3 No.1

The Republic, one of the most famous and influential classic works in the world, focuses on the way of happy life of the ideal polis state(kallipolis). The main subject of this work is, as we all know, justice(dikaiosynê). In the meanwhile, one of the main themes of this very important book is the so called “philosopher king”. Philosopher kings are the rulers of Plato’s ideal polis state. According to Plato, if the ideal state is to ever come into being, philosophers must become kings, or those now called kings must genuinely and adequately philosophize. Plato defined the philosopher as an wisdom(sophia)-lover. Philosopher is the only person who has access to Ideas and loves true knowledge(epistemê). He can also have virtues(aretē) which Plato emphasizes as very important moral elements of the ideal state. In this thesis we will discuss the following questions. 1) Who is the real leader of the ideal state and which qualification is needed for it? 2) What is the real condition of leadership in the ideal state? 3) What is the principle of the rule by philosopher king? 4) How can philosopher kings solve the practical problems in the rule of the ideal state?

Vol.2 No.2

The task and role required for peace education now is, above all, to prepare for the post-armistice system and to nurture the peace capabilities of individual members of the Korean Peninsula so that they can prepare for the situation on the Korean Peninsula after that. The most important task required for peace education at this time is to properly teach the members of our society to correctly remember the ‘Korean War’. The next important role and task of peace education is to lead society members beyond the truth to reconciliation so that they can reflect on and overcome division and war within us. Through peace education, members of our society should develop the capacity for reconciliation and provide opportunities for many people to create new memories and stories of reconciliation and peace. The more fundamental task required for peace education is to nurture more ‘Homo humánĭtas’ in our society, who are full á ĭ of humanity and love for humanity through long-term and substantial education. Through peace education based on dialogue and solidarity, we will be able to achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula through the solidarity of each person who has grown up as ‘Homo humánĭtas’ and to share that peace with more people farther away.

Vol.3 No.1

This article studies the correlation of political leadership and peace from a viewpoint of war and peace. The existing peace studies which approach mostly from structural perspectives rarely deal with the subject of the study. And some studies dealing with individual leader’s contribution to peace are primarily biographical and descriptive. This study compromises the two contending approaches of structuralism and individualism, in order to overcome some methodological problems. The study juxtaposes three variables of structure(institution), political leadership, and peace or war. The nexus of the three variables consists of political system as independent variable, political leadership as intermediate, and peace or war as dependent. Political leadership that is usually constrained by the institution of political system is occasionally able to alter the influence of institution as it wishes. Thus the hypothesis of the study is that depending on the leadership’s disposition, peaceful or bellicose, conflict resolution would result in either peace or war. This hypothesis criticizes one of the main arguments of the democratic peace theory that democracies are intrinsically more peaceful than non-democracies. For the argument, the study classifies political systems into three categories, according to power distribution and decision-making process, e.g. totalitarianism, authoritarianism, and democracy. Political leadership is also classified into accordingly. The totalitarian leadership is the most warlike among the three types, due to the expansionistic inclination. The authoritarian leadership is less belligerent than the former for its inward oriented and self-limiting power pursuit. In the case of reform leadership, however, it may be as peaceful as democratic one. The democratic leadership that normally follows democratic norm and institution often manipulates public opinion and decision-making process to enhance its own interest. In that case, the democratic leaders are as war-prone as autocratic leaders. It is particularly so when democracies launch preemptive attacks on autocracies, rationalizing them as just war.

Vol.4 No.2

This paper predicts how Ukraine war will end and presents policy implications by deriving and analyzing major variables, issues, and ending war models related to the resumption of peace negotiations between the two sides. First, changes in the war situation after Ukraines counteroffensive, the will of both Russia and Ukraine, and the influence of related countries and mediators will be key variables in determining whether and direction to resume peace negotiations. If peace negotiations resume, the two parties, will engage in a fierce tug-of-war based on the tentative agreement of the fifth Istanbul peace negotiations at the end of March 2022. In general, Moscow is expected to focus on handling borders and neutralizing Ukraine, while Kyiv and Washington are expected to focus on securing Ukraines independent armament. In this regard, various ending war models can be assumed, but the possibility of combining some models seems to be greater than the possibility of repeating a specific model. In general, it is highly likely that the characteristics of “initial measures” according to the Korea Model 1, “neutralization” of the Finlandization model, “independent armament” of the Israeli model, “making buffer zones for each of Washington and Moscow” of the Korea Model 2 are properly combined. Therefore, for South Korea, it is necessary to prepare and implement policy countermeasures while paying attention to the expansion of the possibility of resuming dialogue and negotiations between the war parties.

Vol.2 No.2

This essay studies the topic of Paul’s “peace” through the Epistle to the Romans. There were not many researches in the New Testament on Pauls “peace”. However, peace is a central theme of Paul’s theology. Although the term peace does not appear very often in Romans, it is used in an important part of the structure of Romans. The origin of peace is God and Jesus Christ. God reconciled with sinners through the death of Jesus Christ. Believers who have attained peace through Gods deeds are invited to practice this peace, both outside and inside of the community. Pauls concept of peace in Romans is related with the important themes of his theology: grace, justification, reconciliation, the Kingdom of God, and the growths of communities. We can understand the background of Pauls peace better when looking at the political and social background of the Pax Romana period of the Roman Empire in the 1st century as well as the Old Testament. Paul was not a peaceful person in the beginning of his life. After his conversion in the Damascus road, he has experienced more deeply the understanding of peace through his missionary activities and theological reflection.

Vol.2 No.2

The purpose of this thesis is to examine peace theologically. To this end, I first analyzed the messages of the Bible regarding peace. Based on the messages of the Bible, what kind of understanding Christianity had in relation to peace and what it practiced was examined according to historical stages. The results of this paper are as follows: Jesus Christ is the central keyword in understanding peace and can be said to be the source of peace. Peace comes fundamentally from God, and human being has a duty to communicate and testify to his neighbors the peace that God has given him. Therefore, peace needs to be considered from the perspective of divine peace, in which Gods love is the essence, rather than being considered only in terms of deterring war from a military point of view. In other words, world peace is a gift from God, and human being has an obligation to apply that gift to the human world. If peace is to be considered and implemented in terms of the public well-being of the world, it must be done at the level of the kingdom of peace completed by God. Peace based on love of God appears as a lasting relationship, but in a crisis situation where peace is broken, there is always a risk that this relationship will be destroyed. Therefore, for peace, research and application in social, economic, and psychological dimensions, as well as arms control and disarmament, are important, and furthermore, continuous peace movement, peace education, and continuous mutual exchange for tension relief must be implemented in various dimensions.
