      • Chinese-Americans’ Confusion and Pursuit of Their Ethical Identity in Steer Toward Rock

        Hui Su,Lingqin Yi 건국대학교 아시아·디아스포라 연구소 2015 International Journal of Diaspora&Cultural Critici Vol.5 No.2

Steer Toward Rock, a novel written by the female Chinese- American writer Fae Myenne Ng, presents the process of Jack’s confusion and pursuit of his own ethical identity during The Chinese Confession Program period. Because of the special historical period and his personal experience, Jack, as a Chinese immigrant, is in displacement and confusion of his family ethical identity as well as in absence of biological and social ethical identity, which puts him in an ethical predicament. The displacement and absence of Jack’s ethical identity coupled with his hard pursuit are closely related to the special ethical environment of Chinese-American immigrants in the middle of 20th century, which show the traumas and disasters caused by American racial immigration policies — the Chinese Exclusion ACT, and uncover the early Chinese-American immigrants’ history of silence.

The Basis of Sadness : Focusing on the Issue of Ethnicity in Kim Hak-young’s Works

Seungjin Lee 건국대학교 아시아·디아스포라 연구소 2020 International Journal of Diaspora&Cultural Critici Vol.10 No.2

Discussing Zainichi literature means that we must take into consideration the problems behind it. This may be true when discussing other literature, but Zainichi literature has a risk that the problems may be emphasized earlier due to the special circumstances of Japan and the work itself may not be visible. Therefore, when discussing Zainichi literature, it is necessary to pay attention to the environment surrounding Japan, such as political factors, and to study each work in a well-balanced perspective. The same can be said for the study of Kim hak-young’s works. In His works, the father’s ‘house’ does not appear as a space that symbolizes the ‘history of Korean-Japanese people.’ Rather ethnicity, in the works of Kim Hak-young, is more crosely related to the alienation and inevitable exclusion of human beings. This paper looks at the theme of “ethnicity” that he was obsessed to the end by looking over his entire work.

Videodisc Piracy as an Instance of Resistance

Joel David 건국대학교 아시아·디아스포라 연구소 2021 International Journal of Diaspora&Cultural Critici Vol.11 No.1

Until the emergence of the internet as the primary means of film distribution, the video piracy situation in Southeast Asia acquired a renewed degree of urgency when the DVD format was unilaterally adopted by American distribution companies. Concerns regarding the proliferation of illegitimate material were expressed not just at the level of the usual policing agencies but also at the more globally involved levels of government and the US embassy, representing the International Intellectual Property Alliance, with local academicians and artists contributing to the debates. In the case of the Philippines, a former US colony, the involvement of the Muslim community was central to the controversy, as the group primarily responsible for “pirated” products. This paper will attempt to track the various interests represented by the groups of players in the controversy as well as the means by which the issue played itself out.

Policy Studies for Smart Mobility Services in PostCorona Era: Focusing on Convergence of Human and Technology

Byungchul Cho 건국대학교 아시아·디아스포라 연구소 2021 International Journal of Diaspora&Cultural Critici Vol.11 No.1

As the number of telecommuting in the post-corona era increases, the role of wearable mobile devices and smart homes becomes important, and demand for smart mobility services such as self-driving cars beyond time and space constraints is soaring. Smart mobility services in the post-Corona era are signaling a civilization-historical turnaround beyond simple means of transportation. However, most of the research centers of big data and artificial intelligence-based engineers in carrying out research and development of related technologies have been negligent in human-centered research and development have been neglected. In this context, this paper looked at the risk factors caused by personalization services using artificial intelligence and related technologies for economic effects from a humanities perspective. Just as the 14th century plague led the Renaissance, coronavirus is both a crisis of uncertainty and a new opportunity. To overcome this crisis, engineers and humanists related to smart mobility in the post-Corona era will have to present academic map and human-centered services through mutual respect and collaboration.

Ghost Ships as Spectral Geography: An Introduction to North Korean Necro-Mobilities

        Robert Winstanley-Chesters 건국대학교 아시아·디아스포라 연구소 2020 International Journal of Diaspora&Cultural Critici Vol.10 No.2

North Koreans have always been required to work hard, to offer their bodies, spirits and lives to serve Pyongyang’s developmental ambitions and agendas. When times have been difficult North Korean citizens have had to work harder, to dig more and harvest more. North Koreans who live in coastal communities have also been encouraged by bureaucracies and institutions to extract more the seas and oceans. North Korea has often faced difficulties and in developing fishing capabilities and capacities, inspite of ambitions to become a global fishing power. North Koreans who are not traditionally fishermen, have thus set to sea underprepared, under-resourced and lacking in capabilities and many have come to grief on the high seas, and died far from their native shores. Months later their vessels have arrived unannounced and unexpected on the shores of Japan and the Russian Federation, ship intact but with a macabre crew of highly mobile dead North Koreans. These are the ‘ghost ships’ and they have provided an extraordinary challenge for regional authorities on how to manage this form of North Korean mobility. Building from work on spectral and ghostly geographies, this paper considers the mobilities and immobilities of these ships and their crews, including recent work on necro-mobilities. It seeks the spaces created for them on distant shores and the conceptual spaces their bodies create in East Asian regional politics. Finally it places them within the wider frame of active and lively materials from North Korea and the problems generated by their mobilities and immobilities.

Diasporic Blues Imagination: Filipino Becoming and African American Solidarity

Jeffrey Arellano Cabusao 건국대학교 아시아·디아스포라 연구소 2021 International Journal of Diaspora&Cultural Critici Vol.11 No.1

Filipinos are scattered all around the planet—forming a diasporic community of approximately 12 million. In the United States, there are over 4 million Filipinos. Mass migration of Filipinos is intimately intertwined with the unfolding history of the Philippines— a country still in the process of becoming free from its colonial past and neocolonial present. The art (literature and music) created by Filipino migrant artists is explored to gain insight into their understanding of the process of Filipino becoming. This paper examines the “Filipino blues” in Filipino migrant literature (Bienvenido Santos and Carlos Bulosan) and Filipino migrant popular music (Charmaine Clamor and Ruby Ibarra). The “Filipino blues” aesthetic in Filipino migrant art has a bridge-building function. On one hand, it sustains historical memory of solidarity between African Americans and Filipinos. On the other hand, it sustains historical linkages between Filipinos abroad (in the diaspora) and Filipinos in the Philippines mobilizing for self-determination and genuine sovereignty. By providing a feminist rearticulation of the “Filipino blues” of an earlier generation of Filipino migrant artists such as Bulosan and Santos, Clamor’s jazzipino and Ibarra’s hip hop highlight new dimensions of the Filipino diasporic blues imagination in the 21st century.

A Preliminary Study on the Characteristics of Migrants’ Spatial Distribution and Localities of Ethnic Enclaves

Sujeong Kim 건국대학교 아시아·디아스포라 연구소 2021 International Journal of Diaspora&Cultural Critici Vol.11 No.1

his study seeks to examine the spatial distribution of migrants in Korea from the perspective of segregation. Through this, the purpose of this study is to provide basic data to examine the process of forming a new community and the daily lives of migrants due to the influx of migrant groups. To this end, this study first looks at the changes in the migrant distribution patterns based on statistics of foreign migrants in 2010 and 2018. In addition, this study examines the characteristics of the distribution of migrants by micro scales with high Index of Dissimilarity, which show significant changes compared to 2010. The results of this study are as follows. First, compared to 2010, the ethnic enclaves of migrants were expanded from Seoul to Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheongdo, Gwangju metropolitan city, and Daegu metropolitan city, and their nationalities were diversified. Second, even if the proportion and degree of segregation of migrants are all high, the nationalities and visa types of migrants vary depending on the economy, population, and social characteristics of each region. Since the migrants’ ethnic enclaves vary by nationality and visa type, it is necessary to consider these differences in the establishment of migrant policies.

        Two Stories of Mobility

Hayoung Kim 건국대학교 아시아·디아스포라 연구소 2021 International Journal of Diaspora&Cultural Critici Vol.11 No.2

The three essential elements of a person’s life, clothing, food, and shelter, are called “(in Korean) eui, sik, and ju.” However, there is one more important factor that changed the direction of human civilization. It is the concept of “(in Korean) tong”(通), meaning communication and mobility. In particular, in the 21st century, the rapid development of information and communication technologies and mobility technologies is accelerating social change. This paper is a record that the author personally jumped into the scene of change and experienced. Through experience in Internet commerce, food delivery, and personal hired driving, which are the biggest changes in Korean society in 2020, we explored the impact of technological changes on changes in human behavior. In particular, it could be seen that the pace of change is accelerating and irreversible due to the overlap of the Covid-19 incident in 2020. The author argues that social attention and discussion are needed on the change of mobility to change not only communication methods but also basic survival environments such as jobs.
