Experimental study on the combined effects of obstacles and local water mist on gas explosion for maritime safety

        Zhang Bin,Li Zhuoran,Xia Yuanchen,Shi Jihao,Zhang Jinnan,Wang Boqiao,Yu Jiahang,Qu Yanxu,Chen Li,Lin Yejin,Wu Wanqing 대한조선학회 2022 International Journal of Naval Architecture and Oc Vol.14 No.1

A variety of experimental configurations including different water mist obstacles, are used to investigate the combined effects of obstacles and water mist upon the gas explosion. The results demonstrate the 8 mm water mist can significantly inhibit the deflagration, while both 45 mm and 80 mm water mists exhibit the opposite effect under all the locally distributed positions of water spray nozzle without obstacles inside the vessel. When considering the obstacles, the 45 mm water mist starts to mitigate the deflagration and its mitigation effect is more significant than that induced by the 8 mm water mist. What's more, the 80 mm water mist can slow down the flame propagation speed while it would still lead to the gas explosion. Additionally, there remains unchanged about the effect of locally spraying 8 mm water mist upon deflagration at the initial stage of flame development as varying the position of obstacles, while the effects of mitigating deflagration by 45 mm and 80 mm water mist are decreased. The results will make contributions to design the arrangement of equipment and water mist configuration on the offshore platform or NG-fueled ship's engine room so as to mitigate the gas explosion accident.

Meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies in East Asian-ancestry populations identifies four new loci for body mass index

        Wen, Wanqing,Zheng, Wei,Okada, Yukinori,Takeuchi, Fumihiko,Tabara, Yasuharu,Hwang, Joo-Yeon,Dorajoo, Rajkumar,Li, Huaixing,Tsai, Fuu-Jen,Yang, Xiaobo,He, Jiang,Wu, Ying,He, Meian,Zhang, Yi,Liang, Jun IRL Press 2014 Human molecular genetics Vol.23 No.20

<P>Recent genetic association studies have identified 55 genetic loci associated with obesity or body mass index (BMI). The vast majority, 51 loci, however, were identified in European-ancestry populations. We conducted a meta-analysis of associations between BMI and ∼2.5 million genotyped or imputed single nucleotide polymorphisms among 86 757 individuals of Asian ancestry, followed by <I>in silico</I> and <I>de novo</I> replication among 7488–47 352 additional Asian-ancestry individuals. We identified four novel BMI-associated loci near the <I>KCNQ1</I> (rs2237892, <I>P</I> = 9.29 × 10−13), <I>ALDH2/MYL2</I> (rs671, <I>P</I> = 3.40 × 10−11; rs12229654, <I>P</I> = 4.56 × 10−9), <I>ITIH4</I> (rs2535633, <I>P</I> = 1.77 × 10−10) and <I>NT5C2</I> (rs11191580, <I>P</I> = 3.83 × 10−8) genes. The association of BMI with rs2237892, rs671 and rs12229654 was significantly stronger among men than among women. Of the 51 BMI-associated loci initially identified in European-ancestry populations, we confirmed eight loci at the genome-wide significance level (<I>P</I> < 5.0 × 10−8) and an additional 14 at <I>P</I> < 1.0 × 10−3 with the same direction of effect as reported previously. Findings from this analysis expand our knowledge of the genetic basis of obesity.</P>

      • Pulse Energy Modulation in a Three-Switch Buck-Boost Inverter for Distributed Generation Systems

Yonggao Zhang,Yanli Gao,Yi Qu,Wanqing Liu 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Grid and Distributed Comp Vol.9 No.10

Single-phase grid-connected inverters play an important role in small distributed generation (DG) systems. This paper illustrates the circuit configuration and operation principle of a novel single-phase, single-stage, three-switch, fly-back, buck-boost inverter. The equivalent circuits associated with the four operation modes are established for the charging and discharging process. The inverter can operate in both continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). Most importantly, a new pulse generation method called pulse energy modulation (PEM) is proposed and applied to the three-switch buck-boost inverter in this paper. PEM signals for controlling the power switches are generated by meeting the output energy demand in each switching period with the stored energy in the coupled fly-back inductors. The duty ratio of PEM is thus determined by the energy demand and dc input voltage. The efficiency of the inverter used PEM is analyzed. A 400W experimental prototype is built in the laboratory to verify the operation of the proposed pulse energy modulation method. The inverter controller employs DSP dsPIC33FJ64MC506 for controlling, detecting and protecting functions. Experimental results have shown that PEM provides a new modulation mechanism for controlling the three-switch buck-boost inverter to inject a sinusoidal current into the grid under a wide range of operating conditions.

A simple method to isolate structurally and chemically intact brain vascular basement membrane for neural regeneration following traumatic brain injury

        Ji Wanqing,Wu Zhiru,Wen Jiaming,Tang Hengxin,Chen Zhuopeng,Xue Bo,Tian Zhenming,Ba Yueyang,Zhang Ning,Wen Xuejun,Hou Bo 한국생체재료학회 2023 생체재료학회지 Vol.27 No.00

The brain vascular basement membrane (brain-VBM) is an important component of the brain extracellular matrix, and the three-dimensional structure of the cerebrovascular network nested with many cell-adhesive proteins may provide guidance for brain tissue regeneration. However, the potential of ability of brain-VBM to promote neural tissue regeneration has not been examined due to the technical difficulty of isolating intact brain-VBM.The present study developed a simple, effective method to isolate structurally and compositionally intact brain-VBM. Structural and component properties of the brain-VBM were characterized to confirm the technique. Seed cells were cocultured with brain-VBM in vitro to analyze biocompatibility and neurite extension. An experimental rat model of focal traumatic brain injury (TBI) induced by controlled cortical impact were conducted to further test the tissue regeneration ability of brain-VBM.Brain-VBM isolated using genipin showed significantly improved mechanical properties, was easy to handle, supported high cell viability, exhibited strong cell adhesive properties, and promoted neurite extension and outgrowth. Further testing of the isolated brain-VBM transplanted at lesion sites in an experimental rat model of focal TBI demonstrated considerable promise for reconstructing a complete blood vessel network that filled in the lesion cavity and promoting repopulation of neural progenitor cells and neurons. The technique allows isolation of intact brain-VBM as a 3D microvascular scaffold to support brain tissue regeneration following TBI and shows considerable promise for the production of naturally-derived biomaterials for neural tissue engineering.

Easily prepared graphene-modified melamine sponge and its solar-aided adsorption performance on viscous oil

        Fan Mingkan,Liu Huie,Guo Qilin,Zhang Yingbo,Chen Shuang,Zhang Wanqing,Shen Qi,Dou Xiangyan 한국탄소학회 2024 Carbon Letters Vol.34 No.3

Graphene-modified melamine sponges (RGO-MSs) were prepared, as adsorbents with photothermal conversion ability, utilizing solar energy to achieve heavy oil temperature rise, viscosity reduction, and efficient adsorption recovery of highly viscous oil. The RGO-MSs were prepared through a simple impregnation method. The photothermal performance and heavy oil adsorption performances of RGO-MSs with different densities and thicknesses were observed. It was found that as the density increases, the thermal conductivity of RGO-MS increases too, leading to the increase of the average oil absorption rate. The reduction of thickness is beneficial to improving of the adsorption rate. The prepared RGO-MS with a density of 21.5 mg/cm−3 and a height of 1 cm (RGO-MS-3-1) shows excellent mechanical properties and fatigue resistance. Cyclic adsorption–desorption of RGO-MS-3-1 was achieved through extrusion/ ethanol washing. After 10 cycles of reuse through extrusion, the adsorption capacity decreased from 52.90 to 50.02 g g−1, with a loss of 5.4%. The material was then washed with petroleum ether and ethanol in turn. Its adsorption capacity can restored to 98.8% of the initial value, showing a promising application prospect on heavy oil leakage treatment. The easily prepared RGO-MS exhibits excellent light absorption and photothermal oil adsorption properties, providing a good solution for the problem of heavy oil leakage at sea.

      • Genome-Wide Association Study in East Asians Identifies Novel Susceptibility Loci for Breast Cancer

        Long, Jirong,Cai, Qiuyin,Sung, Hyuna,Shi, Jiajun,Zhang, Ben,Choi, Ji-Yeob,Wen, Wanqing,Delahanty, Ryan J.,Lu, Wei,Gao, Yu-Tang,Shen, Hongbing,Park, Sue K.,Chen, Kexin,Shen, Chen-Yang,Ren, Zefang,Haima Public Library of Science 2012 PLoS genetics Vol.8 No.2

<P>Genetic factors play an important role in the etiology of both sporadic and familial breast cancer. We aimed to discover novel genetic susceptibility loci for breast cancer. We conducted a four-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS) in 19,091 cases and 20,606 controls of East-Asian descent including Chinese, Korean, and Japanese women. After analyzing 690,947 SNPs in 2,918 cases and 2,324 controls, we evaluated 5,365 SNPs for replication in 3,972 cases and 3,852 controls. Ninety-four SNPs were further evaluated in 5,203 cases and 5,138 controls, and finally the top 22 SNPs were investigated in up to 17,423 additional subjects (7,489 cases and 9,934 controls). SNP rs9485372, near the TGF-β activated kinase (<I>TAB2</I>) gene in chromosome 6q25.1, showed a consistent association with breast cancer risk across all four stages, with a <I>P</I>-value of 3.8×10−12 in the combined analysis of all samples. Adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) were 0.89 (0.85–0.94) and 0.80 (0.75–0.86) for the A/G and A/A genotypes, respectively, compared with the genotype G/G. SNP rs9383951 (<I>P</I> = 1.9×10−6 from the combined analysis of all samples), located in intron 5 of the <I>ESR1</I> gene, and SNP rs7107217 (<I>P</I> = 4.6×10−7), located at 11q24.3, also showed a consistent association in each of the four stages. This study provides strong evidence for a novel breast cancer susceptibility locus represented by rs9485372, near the <I>TAB2</I> gene (6q25.1), and identifies two possible susceptibility loci located in the <I>ESR1</I> gene and 11q24.3, respectively.</P><P><B>Author Summary</B></P> <P>Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies among women worldwide.
