<P>Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I has been recognized to play critical roles in the pathogenesis of asthma, whereas IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)-3 blocks crucial physiologic manifestations of asthma. IGF-I enhances subepithelial fibrosis, airway inflammation, airway hyperresponsiveness, and airway smooth muscle hyperplasia by interacting with various inflammatory mediators and complex signaling pathways, such as intercellular adhesion molecule-1, and the hypoxia-inducible factor/vascular endothelial growth factor axis. On the other hand, IGFBP-3 decreases airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness through IGFBP-3 receptor-mediated activation of caspases, which subsequently inhibits NF-κB signaling pathway. It also inhibits the IGF-I/hypoxia-inducible factor/vascular endothelial growth factor axis via IGF-I-dependent and/or IGF-I-independent mechanisms. This Translational Review summarizes the role of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 in the context of allergic airway disease, and discusses the therapeutic potential of various strategies targeting the IGF-I and IGFBP-3 signaling pathways for the management of asthma.</P>
노동조합이 기업의 교육훈련투자 및 구성원의 숙련향상에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

노동조합과 교육훈련투자에 대해 이론적으로나 실증분석에서 일관성 있는 결과를 찾기 어렵다. 그러나 노조가 결성된 사업장이 시장에서 생존하고 발전한다는 점에서, 노동조합 조합원의 향상된 숙련도가 생산성 향상으로 이어지고 궁극적으로는 노조결성 기업의 생존과 발전으로 연계될 것이라는 주장은 상당한 설득력을 가진다. 하지만 이러한 주장에도 불구하고 횡단면 분석이 대부분인 실증연구에서는 노동조합과 교육훈련투자에서는 통계적인 유의성을 보이지 않고 오히려 부정적인 관계를 보인 실증분석 결과도 많다. 이러한 배경에는 최근 신규 사원 충원이 많지 않은 현실에서 조합원들이 이미 어느 정도 향상된 숙련도를 가지기 때문에 횡단면 분석에서는 이를 실증적으로 보이기 어려울 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 통계분석상의 문제점을 극복하기 위해 근로자의 평생교육투자를 기준으로 조합원의 경우 비조합원에 비해 더 높을 것이라고 가설을 세우고 실증분석을 함으로써 횡단면 분석의 한계를 극복하고자 하였다. 실증분석 결과 조합원들의 숙련향상도가 비조합원에 비해서 높다는 가설을 부분적으로 지지하였다. 즉 근로자들이 입사한 이후 근속기간 동안 숙련도의 향상은 조합원의 경우 비조합원에 비해 더 높고, 그 결과는 생산성 향상 및 기업의 시장 생존에서 기여한다는 간접적인 연구 결과를 보였다. This article examines the relationship between the union and the investment on workers’ training and education. Historically, the effect of union on training and education of workers have been argued both positive and negative effects of unions. However, the survival and prosper of companies with union in the market shows the higher workers’ competency in unionized companies because those companies can not survive in the market with just paying higher wages and benefits without more qualified workers. The higher qualification of workers may lead to higher productivity and then serve as one of survival factors of unionized companies in the market. Previous empirical analyses usually used cross-sectional data and they may failed to figure out the longitudinal aspect of the relationship between the union and the investment on training and education of workers. We used different approach to check the above longitudinal aspect by using the workers’ lifetime investment on training and education as dependent variable. The result show the workers in unionized companies have higher job qualification upgrade during his or her tenure in the company. This result implies the companies with unions invested more to workers’ training and education to compensate higher labor cost for higher qualification of workers. So, the companies with union have invested more to workers longitudinally although those companies may not invest more in certain specific period.

The inlet water of the target final settling basin inflow into the top of sedimentation basin (0.3 m below the water surface). Therefore, strong water flow is formed on the surface of water and the Hydraulic Retention Time is short. so this causes decrease to sedimentation efficiency. In order to solve these problems, we performed to the computational fluid dynamics diagnosis. As a result of evaluating the hydraulic characteristics, it was confirmed that the lower inflow type was hydraulically advantageous than the conventional upper inflow type. So, we installed a baffle in front of the inlet to improve the lower inflow type. We compared water quality before and after the improvement, after improving two among four settling basin. In autumn(in October), the water quality improved about 60% in SS and 45% in TP compared to before the improvement. In winter(in December), it was about 18% in SS and 25% in TP compared to before the improvement.

This paper presents the measurement of ground thermal conductivity and the characteristics of ground thermal diffusion by a ground heat exchanger(GHE). A borehole is installed to a depth of 175 m with a diameter of 150 ㎜. To analyze the thermal diffusion property of the GHE, thermocouples are installed under the ground near the GHE. The outdoor temperature, the ground temperature, and the water temperature of the GHE are monitored for evaluating the characteristics of ground thermal diffusion. The ground thermal conductivity is evaluated by the in-situ thermal response tester and the line source model. It is found to be 3.08 W /m℃ in this study. The ground temperature is greatly dependent on the outdoor temperature from the ground surface to 2.5 m in depth and is stable below 10m in depth. The surface temperature of the GHE varies as a function of the temperature of circulating water. But the ground temperature at 1.5 m far from the GHE is not changed in accordance with the temperature of circulating water.
Origin of asymmetry of tunneling conductance in CoFeB∕MgO∕CoFeB tunnel junction

<P>We investigated the top and bottom interfaces of a CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB tunnel junction using transmission electron microscope (TEM) and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) in order to understand the origin of the asymmetry of dI/dV in terms of bias polarity. It was found, from a TEM image, that there is no clear cut at the top interface, while the bottom interface has relatively clean boundary. Furthermore, XPS data show that more hydroxides were formed at the top interface than at the bottom interface. These indicate that the hydroxides would hinder the epitaxial crystallinity at the interface in CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB tunnel junctions. Therefore, it is most likely that the asymmetry of dI/dV is caused by the disappearance of minority Bloch state, which is closely correlated with the existence of hydroxides at the top interface of a CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB tunnel junction. CIWS(close-in weapons systems) is a very important weapon system in warships as the last defense weapon against enemy missiles. In order to calculate the CIWS RAM value, the operation records of the warships currently operating CIWS and the maintenance and repair details of each warships CIWS were collected. Based on these data, the RAM value of CIWS was calculated through the operation time analysis of CIWS and the failure and repair time analysis to set the RAM value.

<P>The characteristics of domain wall (DW) pinning at a notch in a spin-valve nanowire were investigated when a DW was created by a current, flowing into a spin-valve nanowire. It was found that DW pinning at a notch is quite sensitive to the magnitude of the current and its polarity. The current-polarity dependence of DW pinning is likely due to the spin structure in the core of the DW, which is determined by an Oersted field from the current in a Cu layer. This indicates that the control of DW pinning at a notch in a nanowire can be achieved by a current acting on its own, which is an important advantage of this method, compared with field-induced DW control.</P>
Dense Matter at RAON: Challenges and Possibilities

Dense nuclear matter is ubiquitous in modern nuclear physics because it is related to many interesting microscopic and macroscopic phenomena such as heavy ion collisions, nuclear structure, and neutron stars. The on-going rare isotope science project in Korea will build up a rare isotope accelerator complex called RAON. One of the main goals of RAON is to investigate rare isotope physics including dense nuclear matter. Using the relativistic Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (RBUU) transport code, we estimate the properties of nuclear matter that can be created from low-energy heavyion collisions at RAON.We give predictions for the maximum baryon density, the isospin asymmetry and the temperature of nuclear matter that would be formed during 197Au+197Au and 132Sn+64Ni reactions. With a large isospin asymmetry, various theoretical studies indicate that the critical densities or temperatures of phase transitions to exotic states decrease. Because a large isospin asymmetry is expected in the dense matter created at RAON, we discuss possibilities of observing exotic states of dense nuclear matter at RAON for large isospin asymmetry.
